MemberI left not too early on my day off for the great falls of the missouri.. I went to get some shotgun powder at shields.. Im a buyer for my pawn shop, and buy whatever I can get where ever i find it, especially when im out of town..
The first shop I went into, after getting the powder, I asked do you have any recurve bows or high end fly rods? , they said right here I just walked past them.. .. One was a sage

Joel ThompsonMemberSounds like a great find Dave. Curious as to why you wasted your time in the barrow pit when you have the mighty MO right there?
Have you ever tried to over line your z-axis? Give it a try and I think you will be surprized!

MemberThanks for your reply Joel. Nary a fly or waiders in the car! I hit the missouri hard the day before and landed one 19 incher right at dark.. So yesterday I was taking the day off.. The ice is receding on Houser lake and I am considering going out and giving roll casting with the new rod a try. Lake fishing gives great photo ops, and unbeliveable catch numbers around here on somedays, but the lake fish just dont have the zoom river fish do.. 🙂 The river is 34 degrees so not much zoom going on anywhere…
As per the 7 wt z axis 9 1/2 foot, it takes a 9 wt line to tame her.. The day i got it (special order) the salesman said, Nice steelhead rod! This thing is a 8/9.. It will totaly wear me out in no time at all.. Good searching rod for wading with streamers tho.. I mean searcing a 200 foot wide river for miles, ;D ..Mar 1, 2008 at 11:02 am #23621dave schlick

Joel ThompsonMemberWhat a steal Dave! I have a buddy out of Billings who told me to always check the pawn shops in Montana for old fly rods. He said lots of guides get into a bind and sell their rods in order to make their drug…err I mean rent money. 😉
That is a little harsh Tim. I can only think of one stoner guide that I know of. Maybe eastern Montana is different but I think the guys that guide around here are just guys working hard to make ends meet. I think a lot of these guys have had a real tough go of it since the 2000 season when things started to dry up and burn. Every year since then there have been restrictions and river closures which is never good when your a guide. That is more likely the reason they would have to sell off some of their gear. I seriously doubt it is drugs.

MemberI know Joel, guiding is a tough business and most of the rods were probably brought to the pawn shops just to make ends meet.
I was just joking around.

Sorry for the miss understanding Tim. I get a little defensive over that kind of stuff since it is my lively hood. Have a great weekend!

MemberI could see the humor in Tims comment, he ment no harm.. .. ,
Whats rare is that the shop did not do an accurate assessent of what its worth.. In the computer age, a valuation is several clicks away..
Dont leave your 1000 dollar flyrod in the boat when you go in to have a beer.. A thief will gladly sell it for $75.oo…. Addicts are a big problem in Helena and butte off and on.. .. Last summer there was a theft ring going into homes, with lookouts using cell phone in the street.. You come home, thier out the back door before you have the slightest idea..
One guy came back from a tour in Irac and he had his entire house cleaned out.. -
