    Hey guys –

I actually saw some grouse in the woods while fishing over the weekend.

I would suggest a Remington 870 if you really want a pump action.

    Zach,

About 7 or 8 years ago I spent some time going to local gun shops and found there to be a pretty good inventory and selection of used guns.

    Zach,

Your best bet for an affordable used shotgun is a local gun show. I looked around on the web for you and discovered that there is one in Atlanta this coming weekend.

    The Info is Below:

I dislike pumps. Like Jim said, a Remington 1187 would be a great choice for an affordable dependable gun that you can always count on.

Take a look around, maybe you can find a used Benelli or Beretta at a bargain price. My brother bought a Benelli Super Black eagle at a gun show a couple of years ago for about $490 (its an $1200 dollar gun).

    Good Luck!

If you want another opition for pump gun you may want to look at at Browning BPS.

up here we don’t shoot em on the wing because they are too stupid to fly even if we kick em

I saw a Benelli Nova .12 gauge pump at Academy for $299. a buddy of mine uses one in the duck blind and loves it.

I agree with Jim and others about the Remington 870, 20 gauge.

My 2c that areprobably worth less than 2c as my hunting days are long behind me. I was going to suggest not overlooking a side by side but someone beat me to the punch. On the few occassions I went birding I used both O/U and side bys. While I preferred the O/U the side by was nice to. Not sure Id want to use a pump for that style. I guess with practise you can get quick enough but there are/were occassion when I had to fire in quick succession when on the wing an Im not sure I could do that with a pump, even when I was practised.

    Dogs.
Not sure Id want to take an untrained or gun shy dog into the field. I still remember one day when one of the party brought a new dog out. It was good at flushing but had a bad habit of leaping into the air after them. I was fortunate enough to recognise it was leaping as I was getting the partridge in m sights and its head ended up square in my sights just as I was about to pull the trigger. Would have been my fault but its not something you need or want to have happen.

Take up Falconry 🙂 You can satisfy the desire to do some small game/bird hunting and develop a bond with a Bird of Prey at the same time.
    j/k its a huge commitment

My first shotgun was also a Remington 870 (12 gauge wingmaster) and yes it is still in service. But my boys a both left handed (left eyed) so they have Browning BPS’s (bottom eject)

Zach, do you know which eye dominate you are.

Another pump to consider would be the Mossberg. I think the

seriously if you want a pump go mossberg 500, the saftey being on top of the grip and the pump release in the back of the trigger gaurd are awesome fueatures.

Unless you are lucky you really dont want a dog who is not a trained pointer to hunt grouse. If you have a dog bumping birds it may do it when the birds are in range and it may do it when they are out of range.

My advice…. Hock one of your higher end Sage rods and buy a good bird dog(English Setter because thats what gentlemen hunt with). Get the pup into birds early and make sure it keeps a close range while hunting thick cover and a broader(but reasonable) range for if you decide to bang pheasants and such. Make sure you get to see the dogs parents work, and if possible take someone who knows something about dogs with you.

The other alternative is to take your pup to a trainer and see if there is anything at all you can do with her. However the gun shy thing is probably insurmountable, though I have heard of some who say it isnt, but that could be like anything else, just a bunch of BS.

Im telling you that taking an untrained dog through grouse country is a very painful way to take a walk i the woods.

Grouse are poison, I recommend you stay away. But if you don’t take my advise, 10 years ago, I visited my best bud in SW Virginia on a regular basis, 28 gauge Parker Repo, Llewellyn Setters, Elhew Pointers. Good exercise, lots of walking/exploring for very, very few birds.

I’d wear orange just to be safe.

I never found Grouse hard to kill, just hard to hit ;D

It’s only proper/sporting to shoot a game bird on the wing.

I had a Setterdog during the time frame I speak of that was as birdy as a dog can be, full of hunt, lock up and you could pick her up and move her, went

I’ve wanted to abuse myself with another obsession for some time, and I think this is a great place to start. 🙂

Warning – the only hobbies I have that have the potential to be as expensive as upland hunting are photography and fly fishing.
