I’m considering buying my first Scott and was wondering if anyone could offer up some info on how the E2 compares to the S4.

    Mike,

is it a Scott rod you want to buy, or a rod that meets your requirement? S4 and E2 are different rods in price range.

I also own a Scott (G2 905) and I love it. Yet I also have Sage (Z-Axis 691) and a whole bunch of other rods. If you don’t want to pay a mortgage style of price, take a look at Vision rods (hmm… no dealer in the USA yet) or brands like TFO. What I mean to say is look how ‘important’ a rod is to you and get the best rod for the budget you set yourself.

    Update Feb 15:
Vision now has a USA dealer: http://www.deschutesangler.com
They don’t have the Vision rods up at the site yet though.

    Mike,

I have never liked the feel of the E2 rods.

I can only compare those two rods as 6wts, the E2 is for me, a rod able to cast any range well I used it with a Sharkskin 6wt, it was easy to cast 100+ with the backing pulling tight to the reel. It also casts well short and mid ranges. The S4 is for me, a rod with a feeling I like, I prefer it short to medium and not so much at distance, given a choice I would take the S4, on a budget the E2 is way better than what you paying. I guess it also depends where it will slot into your rod range, I have a rod that is better for distance fishing and so would look at a rod to fill the gap, of the two, the E2 is a one rod solution

Mike, the E2 in heavier weights are a bit stiffer than the S4’s. The S4’s are great all round rods capable of fishing well at all distances – they are fast and powerful yet retain the Scott feel. Super fast recovery makes them smooth and clean to cast. The S4 would suit a wide range of casting styles. That’s not to detract from the E2 – I like a stiffer rod myself and the E2 action suits me (being more used to salt water fly fishing). I particularly like their 9’6″ #6 and 9′ #7 models.

Great choice! The S4 will do it all, but will be particularly sweet in that casting range.

Have just got my hands on the 5wt S4 and am going to test it out down in NZ over the next month. Have only heard good things about it.
