    Cool Zach,

I have heard many good things about Rolf’s book, a couple of friends have a copy and have said it is great.

    Jay –

That’s probably the best explanation of parabolic tapers I’ve ever read.

I got the book since the English translation came out (about 2 months ago?).
I love the book as it describes many angles of bamboo fly rods from Baginski’s personal view. It’s a much better read than the just ‘documenting writing’ of Martin Keane’s book ‘Classic rods and rodmakers’.

If you like bamboo fly rods, grab one before the book is sold out.

    Zach,

A good, basic book on vintage fly reels is “Antique Fly Reels: A History & Value Guide” by D. B. Homel.

I’ve had a growing interest in vintage fly reels.  I’ve also had a growing interest in bamboo, but couldn’t see springing $1k+ for a rod when much of my fishing requires pushing through tip-snapping underbrush.  Last January for my birthday present I combined my interests and tracked down a Hardy Perfect reel vintage 1920s and an old split cane Southbend refurbished by a local craftsman.  I have $400 into the package & fish it with a #5WF line.

It really got the imagination going the first time a rainbow set the drag zipping on a run.  I love the reel.  What fun to liberate a well engineered piece of equipment back into service after decades of building patina.  Here’s a pic.

I’m hoping to figure out a way try one or two more refined split cane rods, knowing where it is likely to lead.

Are there any modern producers of parabolic rods?

    Regan,

Many current bamboo rod makers still make parabolics.

    Hey Bret –

That was why I used the term ‘statistically.’
