Zach,
A good, basic book on vintage fly reels is “Antique Fly Reels: A History & Value Guide” by D. B. Homel.
I’ve had a growing interest in vintage fly reels. I’ve also had a growing interest in bamboo, but couldn’t see springing $1k+ for a rod when much of my fishing requires pushing through tip-snapping underbrush. Last January for my birthday present I combined my interests and tracked down a Hardy Perfect reel vintage 1920s and an old split cane Southbend refurbished by a local craftsman. I have $400 into the package & fish it with a #5WF line.
It really got the imagination going the first time a rainbow set the drag zipping on a run. I love the reel. What fun to liberate a well engineered piece of equipment back into service after decades of building patina. Here’s a pic.
I’m hoping to figure out a way try one or two more refined split cane rods, knowing where it is likely to lead.
