Heading to the Smoky’s in April

Hey all, Zach especially,

I’m heading to the Smoky’s the week of April 13-20 to fish. I’ve been down a bunch of times before but never so early in the year.
I’m spending my winter at the tying bench and am wondering what hatches to expect mid to late April.
Plans are to fish Metcalf Bottoms and Abrams for browns and rainbows and then spend the rest of the week chasing brookies.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Great info from people who know the park as well as anybody. Also, don’t hesitate to give them a call at the shop in Townsend. Some of the friendliest folks you will ever speak with.

I was down for a few days around the same time last year. A few Quill Gordons and lot’s of BWO’s. The fish, surprisingly enough, seemed to be looking for the smaller bugs. Hope this helps.

I’m certain there are folks more expert on GSMNP, but I’ll throw in my few words.  I’ve only fished the park once, years ago; but I fished in TN within 40 miles at similar elevations a lot.  I often see a larger BWO, like #16.  Matching the hatch won’t matter much with the brookies I think.  Royal Wulffs did good for me in April.  If you get lucky with balmy air temps (a big ‘if’) almost anything might work.
