Jim LamprosMemberBrett’s post prompted me to to leave lurking to others for a day and share some favorite moments from my winter pursuits.
Like Brett, I got to break in some new toys in the last month. To me, taking steelhead on streamers in winter provides the same thrill as coaxing a stubborn brown to a well presented dry in the heat of summer. Deciding to carry the switch rod for the day meant searching for an agressive fish or two when eggs or nymphs might have produced big numbers. Finding those fish made my day on more than one occassion

My girlfriend is a real sport when it comes to joining me on the river. We’ve chased smoky mountain browns and Pere Marquette kings together and this time I wanted her to see first hand what all the steelhead fuss is about. She braved the frigid temps and managed to stick a few chromers sporting a fresh manicure!

A good friend of mine has taken to the sport with enthusiasm this year and in December we had the chance to chase silver for a few days. Mike was making the drifts in no time and quickly learned that the biggest challenge when steelhead fishing is not hooking but landing the brutes. Many fish and a couple of rods later we had some nice pictures for the scrapbook

One thing I’d like to get better at is coming up with creative photo angles when fishing alone. Often the adrenaline of landing a nice fish on a solo adventure clouds my creative mind and I end up with a cleche drive-by snapshot. I know the fish-against-rod shot is probably blasphemy on this site but…

And finally… the unveiling. This one was prompted by the photo contest. For Christmas I got the chance to brew my own riverside beverage, and I thought of the perfect name for this holiday spiced ale…

InactiveI’d like to know how you got that fish to lay there so nice and perfect for you in the B&W photo. Â I have tried one like that before and every time the fish is flopping around like…well…a fish out of water.
And unless I am mistaken…it appears as if the lassie is your fiance’….not your girlfriend.

Jim LamprosMemberSeafood,
Just A ring she’s wearing there, not THE ring. As of now I’m still fishing on the weekends…
As for getting the fish to model, that was a nice spot because I could keep him submerged and breathing but still have him laying down. I also tried to cover his eyes which I read somewhere helps?

Jim LamprosMemberEric,
Probably a good idea to stay away from PA. Dealing with that many guys on the river can be a frustrating experience.
With regard to the Ohio tribs, if we don’t get any heavy rains this week, most if not all will be at fishable levels. That should help a great deal in spreading the crowds out. You will certainly be able to find some open water, especially if you are willing to do a little hiking from an access point.
PM me and I can assist you further.

MemberEric,
I’m sure Jim will tell you something similar as this, being as we fish together quite a bit (Jim was actually the guy who turned me on to Zach’s podcasts and to this board).
