MemberWent to a local tailwater today for an afternoon of chasing trout. Got out there around 1 PM. I wasn’t sure if the water would be cloudy or not with the rain the past two days, so I stopped at a river crossing to check. Finding the water running clear, I headed down river to a favorite stretch of water.
After about 30 minutes fishing, I got to a run I really like to fish. I had never caught anything in the run, but it always seems likely. Tied on a #14 Stimulator with a #18 Olive Zebra Midge dropper. I lost this rig on the very first cast and not wanting to re-tie it, I tied on a #16 Rubber Leg Flash Back something or other. Can’t remember what the fly is called. Anyway, after drifting thru this run, right under the overhanging branches about 10 times, my line just hesitates near the end of my drift. I lift the rod and I am hooked up!
WOW. This is a good size fish. It took around 5-10 minutes to bring this boy in. As soon as I saw him, I was instantly worried that I would lose him. You see, the biggest trout I ever caught was a 14-inch ‘Bow. This was a good bit larger. Anyway, I landed a new PB today. An 18-inch, beautiful ‘Bow. He only jumped once, but took me up stream & down, five or six times each way.

Man, it always feels good to catch something after a few weeks of nothing, but a new PB is even better.
If anyone can ID the fly, I would appreciate it.

MemberGood fish, 6 wt rod, 6x tippet, Tungsten Bead Head Rubber Leg Copper John. A friend found it at Cabelas website. I knew I had bought them there, but had not found them when looking later.
Thanks Spencer.

MemberI think it’s for two flies, but still a bit steep. I plan on beginning fly tying this winter at some point, so if these keep working for me, I’ll be tying some for myself. Or I’ll be looking for standard Copper Johns for much cheaper, which should be much easier to find.
The fly has produced the few times I’ve used it though.

MemberIf you are planning on tying them up, check out his book Barr Flies. It has all of his patterns plus variations and there is quite a bit of info on how he fishes each fly.

MemberI’ve got the book on my wish list, along with host of others at amazon. If it does not come my way Christmas, I’ll be picking it up myself. Was listening to another podcast with John Barr the other day. Good stuff.
By the wasy. I just finished the Peter Morse podcast Zach did. Too cool. Sounds like quite the place to grown up fishing. 🙂
