Finally landed my first brown on a Mouse Pattern at night—after dozens of “almosts” from other fish on past trips.  This big guy attacked the fly with a large GULP, and after missing it twice, he devoured it on his third attack.  He was lying in a slow back eddy of the river, under a large Sycamore tree….just where you’d imagine a predator would live.

Great fish TWiles! I love fishing the mouse! I have never actually fished one at night but here that it can be a hoot! I have had my best luck with them on spring days in the middle of the day. My buddies and I always say the key to success is talking like a mouse when you are fishing it! 🙂 It always amazes me that ANY size Brown will go after a mouse too. Here is a picture of a smaller brown caught on a mouse this past spring.

nice fish and cool experience. Had a trip planned this past spring to do some night fishing on the Jackson in Va. but family health problems had me cancel. Looking forward to a trip this spring.

    Tim,

For an easy to tie and very effective pattern for night fishing in MI look at the “Gartside Gurgler”!

I have been using a modified gurgler pattern that i have been refining the last couple of summers.

Here’s what I’ve experimented with, and the strike/hookup rate has improved with each new creature.
