11 footish one handed rod?

I know cabelas used to have a “float tubers special” but I haven’t seen one in a long time anywhere… I was thinking about building one like an 11 foot one handed 5 wt. I don’t really like overhead casting with a 2 handed rod and can single hand spey just fine so the rear grip seems useless to me and on a 5 wt it should be light enough to cast overhead no problem… Anybody ever try this? Problems? Good results? I figure I’ll get a switch rod blank and throw one handle and a fighting butt on it (I always find myself wishing my 5 wt had a fighting butt) then throw huge mends to keep a good dead drift on the kenai, not to mention be able to surf cast for dollies easy.

The Sage XP 11′ #6 is a great rod for big water nymphing, I’ve used one on the Tongariro river for the last few years and it’s the best rod for the big team of flies and huge indicator used there.
With a 7 weight line this thing will lift & cast a lot of weight with no fuss.

I’ve seen a couple for sale second hand here in OZ in the last couple months.

At that price I can’t justify building it. Its the first factory rod I’ve bought in years.

An 11′ 5wt is sort of an odd size.  Most are either 10′ or 13″+.  The only one I know of that has an 11’ish 5wt is Batson, which makes a 10’8″ 5wt switch rod.  I looked at them one time in a larger weight thinking I may want to build a higher weight beach rod.

Bob have you built on any of Dan’s blanks? They are sweeet blanks and right up there with any of the big companies IMO. I’ve built a few FT’s and SigV’s. I fished the new 9’ SigV 5wt this weekend and it is just an absolute pleasure to cast. Some rods just want to make pretty casts and this is one of them.

TFO’s 11′ 5wt, the Davy Wootten model has a removable butt extension for the lower hand.
So you can have it serve as a single hander.

Funnilyenough I actually prefer casting SH with the extension on _ for my tastes it seems to balance better but in your hands it might feel better off.
