    🙂
The older I get the slower I am and the slower I want my rod to be.  I’ve gone so far as to cast a 6wt line on my Sage SLT 490 causing it to load better at my normal casting distance and helping it have that fuller flex feel to it.   My question: Is there a rod mfg that currently produces a “slow” action graphite rod these days?  Keep in mind that I still want the rod to be at least 8.5′ long and I won’t consider cane at that length.

    Thanks!

Why not cane in that length?

In new rod have a look at the new ZXL, they’re replacing the SLT and are very sweet and user friendly, the action is more medium then slow.
I’m waiting for a Rio Gold line for it, the one I tried on my 5 wt. Zed was perfect for fishing and loaded the rod well.

I have the 8’6 #3 and it’s a gem, my new favorite trout rod.

freeman…if you like the idea of fiberglass then I am sure that more than one person would have suggestions for you here…

Mike McFarland’s new webpage is up and his a lot of new configurations in the Spruce Creek (fiberglass) series out and coming out…including a several glass two handed style rods.  He would build a rod for you in the Spruce Creek series to your exact line weight and length.

Steffen Brother’s will as well.  They roll their own blanks and are very well thought off as far as rod action…but not so much on finish work of their rods.

Ummm…PM me if you have any questions.  Fiberglass is about the most fun I’ve had with a fly rod in a long time.  I think you would be impressed if “SLOW” is what you are after.

I agree with Cameron about the glass rods being slower. However, if you want to stay with graphite, I’d suggest looking/test casting one of the TFO Pro Series rods. IMO, they’re almost as slow as the glass rods.

Well said! Cameron… Life is too short to casting a “un fun” rod!

Now a day, the fiberglass rod have a lot of variations and different personalities. From rods that close to cane action to rods that close to graphite action. S-glass, E-glss etc… “Sometimes”
