MemberThis is my first post with you guys. Start off by just saying HI! However I do have a question; Sage Z Axis vs. Winston BIIx in a 9′ 6 wt. Not at all wanting to stir the pot just looking for honest opionions from what seams to be a good group. Use will mostly be a bigger streamer/ float/ big water, windy dries.
Look forward to the feedback!

MemberWelcome to the board. The Z-axis hands down. I own the 691-4, thats the one with the fighting butt. I have done everything with this rod, I have used it for nymphing, dries, and streamers. I have landed so many different species with this rod ranging from 5lb bonefish to 30lb carp. It is a great casting rod. It loads very easy and handles sink tips with ease. It is an awesome fishing fighting rod. I don’t think I have come across any fish that I couldn’t handle with ease. Also I was amazed with the line control you can have with the rod. The rod can also handle huge streamers on it as well, I have some huge articulated bunny streamers that I swing for smallies and it cast them like they were a size 8 bugger.

David AndersonMemberZed from me as well
I like the Winston, it’s a sweet rod, but IMO it’s action would be better for a lighter rod like a 4 and in a 6

MemberThanks for your posts! I have cast both rods and actually like both. But I realize that lawn casting in no way put a rod through the motions! I have a Winston LT 8’9″ 5wt and the 8’3″ 4wt they are perfect for about 90% of what I want out of a rod however I am looking for a little more backbone. I have read great reviews about both and like I said like casting both just wanted some tried and true opinions from the field.
I would not say that money is not an issue; just I worked my way up the ladder once and realized that I probably spent more up grading than just buying what I truly wanted in the first place.
I will look at the Scott S4 as well.
Thanks again!

MemberI have cast the 691/4 Zaxis. Another great rod. I am actually a little disappointed in a way. It seems like sage tried to create thier version of the BIIX, and in the process sort of took away there golden calf the XP. I was never really a fan of the xp until I started smallmouth fishing and using a variety of line types and heavy/big flies. The Zaxis can do this, just doesnt do it as well in my opinion.
The Biix and Zaxis both seem to have this soft tip strong butt section design, and it doesnt feel very progressive to me. Lord knows I am not that good of a caster, but when you trout fish with rods like the G2, Old G, and WT. You kind of have a different feel for rods. Needless to say I think the E2 6wt is the a primo streamer rod.

Wow…Mike
I have exact the same feeling about the Zed that you just described.I still have to agree Zed is very very nice and light rod though. But for me, I use a lot of heavy fly in windy day, I “punch the line”

MemberThe Z is faster then the XP, but it does have a softer tip, I was informed that this was done due to the XP having too fast of a tip and popping the lighter tippets. Not a good thing for trout anglers.

MemberXi2 is good for casting on the lawn…………go with the Z Axis………….or to really stir the pot, test out the GLX.

MemberKeep stirring… My fav rods right now are the Scott F 703/3 and an older model Scott G 845/5
My only “fast” rod is a 9′ #7 TFO TICR

noneMemberWell not sure if my contribution adds to anything but here goes…
Spencer’s tip about trying out a more affordable rod (yet still very good rods!) is probably what I would do. Most high end rods are fantastic casting & fishing rods, yet the differences are barely noticable to novices. If one gets more experienced, these small differences will be the key points which one will prefer one rod to the other.
I personally bought the Z-axis because I didn’t like the XP’s stiff all-the-way action. Wonderful casting rods though! Yet only when casting longer lines (say upwards of 25-30 feet). Overlining with one weight also helped to smooth out the rod when casting shorter.
But again, if you got enough bucks, just get them all! 😀
Just my 2cts…
Jay
