Eric WellerMemberWell I’m back at home after 8 days in Montana/Wyoming for fishing. It was a great trip, unusual weather and great times. We fished the Madison river first and didn’t do that well on our first day there. Our second day was a float trip out of the Slide Inn with our guide John McClure. If you want a first class guide and a great person to hang with get John. He will fish you to death! A nice way to go! We mainly threw streamers which is what I love to do and slammed some big fish. The weather was cloudy and rainy and the morning was great with me getting a strike 30 seconds into our float. We ended up with some nice fish, I landed a 19 inch rainbow and my buddy had a 20 inch plus brown. We took very few fish on drys, I landed a nice rainbow on a crane fly and my buddy took one on a caddis. The fish really wanted steamers. When we were done I needed therapy for throwing those huge flies all day. Our guide John fished us from 545am until 830pm then he stopped at the local tavern to make sure they would keep the kitchen open for us to eat. He is a great guy and will bend over backwards for you. He even setup two rods for us, a nymph rig for me and a steamer rod for my fishing partner so we wouldn’t have to change spools or reels when we switched from one to the other. You can’t go wrong with the Slide Inn and especially John McClure.
The parked fished pretty good. We did a hike up into the top of the second meadow and nabbed some nice cutts. The weather was great, 75 degrees with a little wind. This was perfect for me since I forgot my wading boots and wet waded the entire day. I’m glad it wasn’t cold. The Lamar and Soda Butte were blown out but soda cleared up for us the next day. I had a career day on Soda Butte. With it being Sunday and the weather crappy, snow/sleet/rain and cold(My ideal fishing weather) there was no one on the steam. My buddies abandon me to go watch the end of the browns/steelers game and I instisted on staying to fish. Things were strating to get hot! As soon as they left the drakes started to come off, not heavy but any drake on the water was doa! I’m not a fish counting guy, I can’t tell you how many fish I caught on the Madison or on Slough creek but I did keep track on the ‘butte. I’m not joking when I say I caught 60 fish that day. I’m serious, 60 fish. I missed as many, it was smokin’ on the butte that day. After that things calmed down and I was pretty much satisfied to go home. I mean after a couple days of catching fish, big fish, it was really time to go. I mean, I was happy and ready to leave. This was one of the best trips I ever had out west in terms of fishing. Again if you want to fish the Madison, go with the Slide Inn and John McClure. If you want to fish Slough creek, the hike to the second or even third meadow is worth it. More fish and bigger fish. Here’s some of my photos;

Here’s one of my Soda butte cutts

I really wished this photo turned out better, right at dark and a new camera doesn’t bode well for great shots, this is my buddies 20″plus brown taken on streamers

What a great trip!!!!

MemberAhhh, Finally a little feedback on the trip this year!!! How long were you guys going to keep me in the dark? Two years ago, when you and Auggie had to leave, Doug and I had a similar day on the Butte. It was too cold and wet for those guys and we stayed and fished drakes and had a BLAST!!! Anyway, Glad you guys had a good trip, not a GREAT one because I wasn’t there right
