I saw on Dan Blanton’s board that Sage is/has a new rod set out – they are lmb (bass)/backcountry rods – probably 7’6″ or 8′ in 7-9 wts – anybody thrown one of these yet? I’d be interested to see how it performs in comparison to the TFO TiCrX 7’6″ 8 wt.

I have heard that they are going to conform to the BASS Masters rules, I don’t know what the rules are, but there is a length constraint… so they have to be 7’6 ?? so now those guys can fish with fly’s for their bass, it will be interesting to see if any do…

If you could point me at that board, I would love to read the tread.

I think the rule is under 8 feet, and the sage I believe is 7’11” to accomodate that rule.

Dan’s board address – I hope you don’t mind Zach since you are a sometime poster on the site – is http://www.danblanton.com/bulletin.php

You should try fly fishing for bass, it can be some of the most exciting fly fishing out there – when that monster comes up from the deep and engulfs your bug or popper, you nearly wet your pants – you know it can happen, but man your heart starts pumping every time –

I see that TFO also has a new line of rods coming out, I’m trying to get my hands on one – they are the Axiom series –

It’s all about leaking the info before the show in Denver –

I recently joined the local fly fishing club here in Fresno. The 1st meeting I attended, the Sage rep for the Southwest, John Sherman, brought the new Bass Rods & the ZXL rods out for the club members to cast. I skipped on the casting as I can’t afford to fall for a rod in the rpice range these are going for. Anyway, the Bass rods are 7′ 11 3/4” in length, just under the 8 foot max for tournament fishing. Also, they are not rated in line weights, rather there are two: a Small Mouth & a Large Mouth. I asked John what lines would be used if the rods aren’t rated the same way other fly rods are. He said that they will come with a line for the rod, but that the Smallie would be close to a 6-7 wt. & the Large Mouth nearer an 8 wt.

As I said, I did not cast the rods, but John was able to effortlessly turn over a Deer Hair Mouse with the Bass rods.

Ive cast a prototype which was closer to a 9-10wt.
The actual production model isn’t spoosed to be a “aggressive” but still a stout stick for throwing heavy flies on lakes.

This isn’t your average smallmouth rod. Stout, fast, and designed to lift/pull a fish out of cover, not play them.
Very very different from the X rod, which has that soft tip.

Great barramundi fly for Oz, and enywhere you need the grunt to throw big flies and put the hurt on fish fast. Pike, largemouth etc.

Scott has had a rod similiar to this for a while now.
I cast it in February at a fly show:
    Back Country Special
    779/3 9wt. 7’7″

My buddy hand it to me at the casting pool and asked me to cast it but not look at what it was. It sure was different and thunky at short range. Once a bit of line got out though it was a rocket!
Though it’ll no doubt work for bass tourneys, Scott markets it as a tarpon/kayak/mangrove rod.
My fishing buddy bought one for salmon fishing in close quarters.

LMB are a blast on the fly, especially top water. There is a lake close to my house where I try to catch a Missouri Pan fish slam: bass, blue gill, and crappie all on a 5 wt rod with the same fly (an olive wooly bugger, of course.) I have an old Loomis megataper which is 8’6″ and casts and fights fish very well. I would be interested in both the Sage rods, but especially the lighter one for bonefishing on a windless day as I have a small arsenal of 8 weights, already. How much are they running and why would I want to buy their line especially if it is not intended for hot salt water?

You guys can always cross-link from here, but particularly to Dan’s excellent board.
