There has been a good deal of talk on the board about bonefishing and saltwater in general lately.

    Neil –

It seems to be a boating affair only; I haven’t located anywhere with passable wading carp water yet.

I have the Randal Kaufman book ‘Bonefish’.

Bonefish Fly Patterns and Fly Fishing for Bonefish, both by Dick Brown, are very good.

    Where are you going?

Going to Islamorada in December and Mangrove Cay, Andros in May.

Keys bones are tough but the lessons you learn in Islamorada should serve you well in the Bahamas. A good 8 weight is generally a good choice for bones.

I found the Chico Fernandez book, Fly Fishing for Bonefish, to be helpful.  Its biggest strengths are the sections that discuss fish behavior and biology.  It is a worthwhile read.  I read it before I fished Islamorada and it helps give you a nice perspective about what is going on.

You have already hit on the best idea, IMHO, and that is to practice your casting.  I spent quite a bit of time lawn casting before my trip and it really helped.

I have DVD out called “Arbor to Fly” which sets out the knots and loop system I use right through the system. It focuses on gsp line as backing and how to treat the stuff. You can order it from fishingdvd.com.au
