The Itinerant AnglerI wore the waders in Jackson for a couple days when they came out, and I’ve seen Ian Crabtree use his pretty extensively.

Joel ThompsonMemberI am not sure if I can agree with Zach on this one. The fly shop that I do a lot of work with use to carry the Cloudveil waders. Use to being the key words there. They had so many problems with the waders leaking that they stopped carrying them all together. Plus I just got to see the new Simms line up for 2008 two days ago and the new waders they have coming out are very impressive and they come with a NEW Gore Tex that is lighter, more breathable, more durable, and more flexible. The new G3 is going to released in Sept. and I think it will be worth waiting for!
Just my opinion.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Joel –
On the ground experience is always going to trump manufacturing tests.

MemberI am notoriously rough on waders. I don’t treat them with care. I have no problem hiking 5 miles through bramble in them or sliding down muddy escarpments to the rivers edge. I never hang them up, and rarely clean them. To me, waders are a utility tool, not a dainty pair of business slacks, and I treat them as such.
Last summer guiding in Unalakleet AK I completely destroyed my second pair of Patagonia Watermaster waders (the seams ripped out, the knees leaked profusely, and the gravel guards frittered away to nothing). I had already destroyed one pair of Watermasters in the Appalachians the previous year fishing every other day with Ian Crabtree. When my Watermasters failed (I spent a week or so experimenting with super glue…), I called Cloudveil up, told them my predicament, and within 7 days I had a pair of 8X’s in hand. What a customer service feat!
I treated the new 8X’s no different than I had the destroyed Patagonia’s. I wore them every day 6am to 7:30pm. I kneeled in the dirt and rocks to clean fish, I hiked through bushes, etc. etc. etc. I think I purposely tried to make them spring a leak….After I finished guiding, I took them to Southern AK with me and hiked all around the streams north of Anchorage and then on to the Kenai penninsula. They never failed, and believe you me, I certainly fell/slid/jumped over many an obstacle! Zach, after Ian saw how they held up

Joel ThompsonMemberZach,
Comparing the old Gore with the New Gore side by side the new Gore seamed to be a lot more supple. Part of that I think is due to it being less bulky than the old stuff. Granted I was comparing single pieces of fabric, but never the less it should have the same over all affect on the waders.
I think the wader that most impressed me was the ones that could be worn as a pant and then unzip to become chest waders. I will buy those for sure in the spring! That said I have a new pair of the G3 guide waders heading my way as soon as they are released. I just couldn’t pass up the deal they made me on them.
