Simon ChuMemberI’m pretty pumped about coming over to the US in September and will have an opportunity to fish in Vermont briefly.
I hope to visit the Museum of flyfishing and at least dip my toes into the famous waters I read about (Battenkill! Can I visit the spring creeks too?)What I am really excited about is taking photos of wee fish. I asked my mates to send me to places where I might get some really pretty brookies and browns. Are there other species there as well (Cutthroat?)?
I was wondering about photographing these guys. I really want one “in the hand”, but apart from that, have you any funky shots or recommendations?
thanks

MemberThere aren’t any Cutthroat in VT to my knowledge, but you could take a shot at some landlocked atlantic salmon.

MemberSimon,
I really share your appreciation for the little guys. In my biased opinion (when it comes to the wee size class) there isn’t anything prettier than a cutthroat trout. But to see fish like the one attached (coastal cutthroat) you’ll have to make a stop in WA state.

MemberWell, the photo doesn’t do the poor thing justice and I obviously need some direction on how to post photos.
I’ll search the archives…

Simon ChuMemberthanks guys
Cool fish!
Its funny my buddies were keen to get me onto some 20inch fish? I’m more keen to catch something with amazing parr spots and fits in my hand. ::)
Apparently little streams and a 2 weight. Dries? Anything in particular?
I’m sure alaska will treat me to the odd stump puller but in the meantime I’m really looking forward to vermont. Can’t wait to check out the museumAug 1, 2007 at 4:54 am #18345Darrin Terry
MemberSimon, I can’t speak to really big fish, but the little fellers can be a hoot. I was up fishing some small creeks in the Sierras the weekend of July 20-22. I landed a 4 or 5 Rainbows around 12-13 inch. However, I truely had a blast watching the 3-4 inch trout seriously attacking my fly. Must have caught 6 or 8 in one pool of very clear shallow water. I ended up tying on #8 hopper pattern just so I would not hook them. Watched for about 10 minutes as they rocketed off the bottom after this thing. They kept knocking the fly about an inch into the air when they hit it. I was probably gigging like a school girl, but it was lots of fun. And they are beautiful. No brookies caught that trip, tho I usually manage a few in those creeks.
Good luck, Darrin

MemberHey Simon,
When are you coming through SW Vermont? I can hook you up with some absolutely gorgeous brookie water. That’s pretty much all I fish for these days. Drop me an e-mail or give a call.

The Itinerant AnglerSimon –
You’ll want to shoot with a macro lens or macro setting.
