A friend and I fished a blueline yesterday, and I’m still tired from hiking up that rock-laden stream bed. The water was slightly stained which should have made for better fishing but it was slow until about 6pm. I’m of the opinion that in summer if you really want action on the blue lines you need to stick to early morning and evening – that’s when the fish seem to move out of shelter and actively forage. We saw lots of good water but had few hits — I took most of my fish on a size 18 red squirrel nymph fished 15″ behind a size 14 parachute Adams on 6X. We switched flies a lot and the only other dry that received some interest was a size 12 orange stimmie. We also found the “toxic zone” on that stream – as we were bushwacking around a pool, two feet in front of me a pile of leaves turned in something that moved slightly out of my way and then posed for a series of pictures (see scan). Then as we were backing away after deciding to wade through the pool, I stepped on a yellow-jacket nest and got stung a bunch. Chris, ever the gentleman has already claimed publicly that he stepped on the nest but I’m pretty sure it was me because I got stung more than he did. The weirdest thing about that experience is that for about 30 seconds you don’t really know what’s going on – it just feels like someone is pinching you — then the light bulb goes off and it’s “Let’s get the he11 out of here”. And smashing those little yellow pests against your body isn’t much fun. Sheesh. Well all in all it was a great day, especially when a 14″ brown rolled on my stimmie — I’ll be back! Scans are of our motley crew, the creek, a brookie and our serpentine friend. cheers, g2 hmmmm, is there some way to post multiple scans in one post????
