Mike, I am new to this forum as well. I have a trip to South Africa planned for this fall, but won’t be spending any time around Johannesburg. We are flying into Port Elizabeth and then driving up the coast to Capetown. I was planning on bringing a 5 piece 7 wt and fishing wherever I could. I was only going to bring Clousers. What should I be targeting on the’ garden route’ and what other flies should I bring? Am I going to be under gunned?

Ah, the beauty of a global community…

I hope you know what you are in for… said to be the Garden of Eden, probably the prettiest part of the world I know… how long are you planning your trip??

I can’t say you are under gunned, the 7w should do the trick nicely, there might be one or two spots where you might need a bit more power, but then there are others where a 9w I way too much stick, nice middle of the road stick…

I would load that with an intermediate Striped Bass Taper and 200 yards of backing…

    Flies…
    Cluosers
    Mud Charlie’s
    Crazy Charlie’s
    Poppers
    Candy’s

    You’r going to find…
    Shad
    Garrick
    Springer
    Grunter
    Cob
    Bull Mullet

That should do the trick nicely…

I will look up Anthony Kruger’s mail address and PM you, he is an expert on the region, and owns a fly shop in PE, which also happens to be the town I grew up in…

Jeff, how long are you going to be in Cape Town, because if you enjoy small stream fishing, then you are in for a real treat?
