MemberJust wondering…has anyone has checked out any of the fly fishing DVDs out there?
Aside from the Trout Bum Diaries, which I have heard loads about, I have not heard much about others. At the moment I’m thinking about checking out the http://www.sportingfly.com DVD “Kenai River Alaska”. I kind of figure I should check it out since the host, Dave Long, lived 3 doors down from me when I was in middle school thru junior college. He was our high school football coach, and I played waterpolo & graduated with his oldest son. So it would be cool to see someone I knew doing this sort of thing.
I actually found out about his DVD series in the very first fly fishing podcast I listened to. Sorry Zach, it wasn’t one of yours :D. During the podcast he started talking about my high school and I was quite surprised to find out out it was my neighbor. Of course I have not talked to him or his sons since high school, 21 years now.
I have not bought any of the DVDs yet, and am wondering if anyone else might have seen them or could recommend any others. Something to watch during those times when I can’t get out there myself. You know, living vicariously and all.:D

Simon ChuMemberHi Darrin
Have you ever seen any of the trophy trout series of DVDs made from down here in NZ? They highlight a lot of the rivers right where I live and you can see snippets of these DVDs online (Zach ? can I stick a link here?)
Basically just guys going fishing and documenting their days on the river but very good footage. Robbie who is the primary angler in most of the fishing sequences is a good friend of mine and we hang out a bit. Lots of big fish and most on the dry, all sight fishing. The other blokes are members of our local “flyflingers and streambashers” club. Its very quintessential Kiwi fishing I guess. Working together to find fish. wind and sometimes getting busted off. I don’t think the guys ever film a day where they get skunked but that happens too! ::)
Another series I really like is “A river somewhere”. Basically its a travel show where flyfishing around the world is the primary reason for travelling. Made by two very witty comedians, the guys go bonefishing, chase trout and visit far away places including Bhutan. Its Australian and we kiwis are use to laughing at them

MemberThose sound cool Simon. I don’t see me going to any of these places to fish any times soon, but we like to dream. I am very new to fly fishing having just started this spring. However trout fishing has been my fishing interest since I started fishing 6-7 years back. At the moment, it seems that all I do think/plan/scheme fishing. 🙂 So watching a fishing video seems to fit the mode right now. My Dad is comong to visit tonight, so of course we’re going fishing tomorrow. 😉 ;D
Thanks for the feedback on some of your local vids. NZ is most definitely one of the places I want to visit in my life. The trout fishing sounds & looks incredible! Aqfully big fish, especially compared to the little guys in most of sring creeks I fish. Of course I’ll be up near Golden Trout country in 4 weeks & again 6 weeks after. Hopefully I’ll get some decent pics.

Simon ChuMemberHere you go Darrin
A link to the guys at deep stream productions who make the Trophy trout series.
A lot of what is on their DVDs is not online at Hook.tv but the anglers and locations are basically the same.
Actually this kind of angling is very typical of what I do most of the summer.
BTW not all our fish are big. Most people would consider a 6lber big and the doubles (10) are awesome to catch but the days you chase them you have to be prepared to miss out totally. (think large fish but not many)
Most people would catch fish averaging 3-4 lbs but a friend and I sometimes chase “dinks” just because they are good looking especially if they still have their parr spots. 🙂http://hook.tv/Profile.aspx?userId=33455
We have a local trading site called trademe.co.nz

MemberThanks once again Simon. I’ll check the link more closely this evening after getting my gear ready for tommorow.
Yeah, the dinks. I know what you mean about the colors, and I too love the parr marks. A little more character in them sometimes. And it’s amazing much they fight for their size. There is another fly fishing board I have been posting at which mostly specializes in the southern Sierras here in California arounf the Kern River drainage. That often means Golden Trout, which also means small, usually under 8-inch. But real beauties for fish. I’ve only caugt one so far, a few years back on spinning gear with a size 12 single egg hook. Look forward to paying them a visit with a fly rod now. I’m not complaining about fish size, as it’s not what drives me. Not to say I don’t dream some. 😉 Anyway thanks for the feedback.
