MemberCraig and I casted big stuff for Stripers today and it was slow till around dark thirty. We had seen some good size fish cruising so about dinner time we headed to where I thought they might be waiting. It was about our 10th cast when I felt my fly get SLAMMED by a what felt like a train! I locked the line between my fingers and set the hook hard. A huge eruption exploded about 40 yards in front of the boat and I knew I had hooked a very good Striper. It was short lived however, I guess I had a wind knot or just a bad place in my leader cause the fish broke off before I could get it on the reel. Just as my fish broke off, and we’re talking seconds here, the water hadn’t even settled yet,, Craig’s rod doubles over and the Lamson reel starts making pretty music.
Now I’ve seen people have a good time but Craig was about to just lift off the deck of my boat he was so excited. This fish took him deep into the backing and he started asking how much backing I had on it. Well’ ahhh,,, maybe we better chase it was my reply. We chased the fish around for about 15 min. Craig was determined to bring this guy in and didn’t want to hog it at all. He did a hell of a job handling a fish that size on an 8wt. We got the Striper in the net, shot some pics then weighed it. 22 pounds on the Boga. After about five minutes of resuscitating the fish to relieve the Lactic acid it had built up from a long fight it swam off strong to fight another day.
To hook two fish of that size on the fly is a memory I’ll hold for a long time. Craig standing on the deck of the Supreme grinning from ear to ear while the Lamson was singing in the backgounrd is a memory I’ll never forget and I doubt he will either.
Notice the pretty yellow backing on Craigs rod and my rod laying a pile of line. God I love the excitement of Striper fishing!

MemberCarter you can order the front deck as big as you want I think. I got mine 48″ long. Without tooting my own horn, well hell I didn’t engineer the boat, when equipped right, it is the baddest river boat for fly fishing ever made as far as I’m concerned (Drift boats are in another category). Did I mention it’ll run 25 mph or float in 3″ of water. 🙂 Comes in handy around here with the drought we’re having.

MemberCompare that fish to those two we caught on planer boards. I think we caught hybrids buddy – state record hybrids in all likelihood.
You can’t compare the big-bellied March/April fish to skinny summer and autumn fish.
