I got to say, this weekend was a great weekend. I got a late hall pass, so I rounded up a group of guys on short notice to head down to the White. Yes, I know it is / was Mother’s Day. We stayed at the White Sands Motel in Cotter, as it is cheap (about $47/night) Hindsight being 20/20, we probably should have found a different place to stay but it wasn’t all bad (except for the mold on the bricks in the shower in the bathrooms). We did get several laughs out of the facilities, and the White Sands Restaurant is hard to beat (great omlette and biscuits and gravy).

I was up at 4:00am on friday morning with the hopes of getting to the office early and getting out of town earlier, but several things led to us finally breaking out of St. Louis around 6pm. We arrived at Bull Shoals Dam around 11pm and quickly suited up and night fished until about 2:30am. It was a really cool night to be on the water, but everyone but McClane was skunked. His few fish came on bass bug cork poppers (i think he landed 2 or 3). We were up at 6am and at round house shoals on Saturday by 7am — after the White Sands breakfast. McClane, Beez, and Wise put on a nymphing clinic while I struggled (as usual). The three of them were in to some serious numbers of fish — but they were all mainly dinks. McClane and I wanted to head up to the dam and try some fishing up there — as the recording didn’t say that 2 units were on. Well, the recording was wrong and we ended up not fishing at the dam — drove back to Gassville for lunch at KT’s BBQ (PHENOMENAL…..).

After lunch I had to catch some sleep back at the motel, and those three went to the State Park to fish until dark. They had success wading close to the shore and McClane was rewarded with an 18-1/2″ brown (I think it was a brown trout). We tried night fishing again (after a dinner at 178 Club) to no avail (we all struck out) and finally turned in around 1:30am.

We were back at it with a 6am phone call from my good friend Jim Traylor (aka JimmyT’s FlyFishingArkansas.com Guide Service) as he had a day off and wanted to fish since we were in town.
