Just wanted to know if anybody has any suggestions for a reel choice for a 8’8″ 4wt. Scott G2….For the past two weeks or so I danced around the idea of finally buying a high-priced/valued rod and after casting a Z-Axis, Boron IIT, and the G2, the choice was clear….Now I need a reel….was going to either go with Ross or Lamson…any input would be great!!!

Personally I like the looks of a black reel with the black hardware on the G2, but that’s strictly aesthetic.

Here are my suggestions…and I agree with Zach that with the black hardware of the rod…that I’d match it with a black reel.

    Old School Choice –
Hardy Lightweight (Though it is a lot of money for a click and pawl reel)

    New School Choices –
Ross Evolution (Some people on this board don’t like them…but I like the styling)

Tibor Spring Creek CL – I’ve got one of these for my four weight…and it is a GREAT reel.

Great suggestions guys……question for Cameron…where do I find Tibor Spring Creek Reels and I also heard over the weekend that Tibor reels have too many parts and they are a pain…parts never really bothered me, could u please give me any concerns of yours,if any with that particular reel…Thanks

I’m not Cameron, but I’ll answer the question anyway.

The Spring Creek is one of the three models in the Tibor Light series.

I like everything about the design of the light series reels except for the drag adjustment. That little screw is just way too small.

I’ve never placed much emphasis on drag when it comes to trout reels so click and pawl reels have always sufficed.

I’ll second the Abel Creek #2 reel – depending on where you fish, you could get away with a #1 if you are trying to keep weight down. A disc drag is superfluous with a 4-wt. rod, in my opinion. They are lightweight – only marginally heavier than the Lamsons I believe. And you can’t find a fault with the manufacture; they are top quality reels.

The Creek is a large arbor design that maintains a conservative design. I don’t own a G2 but for a more moderate-action rod, I think the Abel Creek fits the bill nicely.

Good luck with the decision. New gear is fun.

Was wondering if anybody thinks a bauer Mackenzie Superlite would balance well on the G2??? They are pretty good reels and was wondering how that might match up?? Thanks guys for all your help so far… 🙂

I agree with a few points in this thread…

Drag on light reels is really overkill in most situations.  To bad there aren’t more options in the click and pawl reels.  I think reel makers are just following what everyone else is doing and what the customers think they want or need.

The tiny drag adjustment screw would be the ONLY thing about the Tibor Spring Creek CL that is at all a downside.  The reel is pretty sweet otherwise.

I’ve checked them out before and the Abel Creek reels are pretty nice and not at a bad price point.

I fish a Bauer M1 on the Scott G2 885/4 and thought it was a great marriage. Bauer reels are tough, reliable, and the customer service is great if you need it.

My wife fishes a black Evo on her 5 wt. g2 and it really is a pretty combo that balances well.

I just picked up a Nautillus FW for my Scott A2 #5, the reel looks and feel great.
Really on the light weight side. The drag seems to be as good as it gets… I can’t wait to put it to the test.

I also own a Lamson litespeed (old version) and a galvan Rush, and I have to admit these three babies feel good. Butter smooth and reliable.

The Galvan would be the smoothest of them in the smooth spinning feel and very wide range of low drag settings which is very good for fishing trout.

The finish on my lamson (guide finish) feels the thoughest among the three, with the nautillus coming second.

Another point, I think I prefer the width and diameter ratio better on the Nautillus and the Rush compare to the lamson, the lamson is the widthest of the three so you have to be a little bit carefull about line building up on one side of the spool when retrieving the line, but nothing really bad.

Last point, the clics are different (depending if you are a clic sound lover or not) The Nautillus has the strongest clic, so strong that if you free any drag pressure, the clicker is enough to avoid overrun of the spool (I may remove it, just a screw, to get an even smoother low pressure drag setting) the lamson clicker is based on the same principle than the nautillus clicker but it is smoother and make less noise. Then the galvan get a 2 different sounds very light clics (outgoing and retrieving sounds).

You can remove the clickers on the lamson and nautillus but not on the Galvan. (I know that the Galvan OB has a on-way outgoing clic only with a silent retrieve)

Well you get the picture, I love them all three (although I have to fish the Nautillus yet). The Nautillus FW feel to me like an hybrid between the lamson and the galvan based on feel and design.

Then for a Scott G2 I would probably match a Galvan reel (OB or Rush, the torque is to modern to me for the “soul” of this rod), I have my Rush on a T&T rod, I like also the oversized drag knob on this one. I have my lamson on a Scott S3 and feel like it’s a good match (some kind of speedsters combo). Then I feel like the Nautillus is a great all-around reel, though, versatile drag I won’t be afraid of putting a lot of pressure on this one (may even put it to the test in some superlight saltwater fishing).

I think the best for your choice would be to go to a fly shop and have a in-hand feel for the reels you are considering, a lot of very good stuff in the 200$ range.

oups, that was long… sorry. ::)
