MemberThis photo turned out pretty neat… A guy from Bozeman was taking it and said, put it up next to your face and point it at me.. I did and this just over 5 pounder was really showing off… Or is it me thats showing off.. 🙂 He (from
Bozeman) was really pounding them with this little grey fly, neither of knew what it was.. He said he got a monster before i came, he Guessed about 6 lbs or more… I did very well for the day, landing 6 fish. We all lost many fish,, small flies, small tippets and big fish… dave(p.s.

MemberIs that your thumb sticking through the gills into the mouth?

MemberA photo is worth a thousand lies … but a thumb in the gill (or what certainly looks like one) is worth avoiding. Fish handling skills too often go unappreciated. That said, gorgeous fish.

MemberIt sure looks like it… I hadnt noticed it… I suppose this is a no no? This fish was a real fighter. It took very long to bring it in, and still fiesty on the edge of the river, and powerfull…. It just wouldnt come into shallow water… . The biggest risk to the gills is weighing it…

MemberThanks for not getting defensive, fffffg. Whenever possible I leave my fish in the water while removing the hook. Haven’t posed for a picture in a long time … but with a fish like that, I’d probably pick it up too … maybe even hold it by my face! But I’d try to keep my thumb out of the gill plate. With practice I’ve gotten better at fish handling, but I still fumble sometimes after lo these many years.
Got to say I like your attitude. Hope you hook many more.

MemberHere in TN they stick 8/0 hooks in their mouth and out their nostril then drag them behind planer boards all day in search of Striper. When the day is done and one has been smacked by giant Striper a few times, they take em home and put em in a tank to heal for the next weekend. Now before you get all up in arms 1, its legal in TN and 2, they sell Trout just for this purpose here.
The whole idea that trout are delicate little fish that shouldn’t even leave the water when un hooking them is horse poky. I’m not advocating the torture of Trout, I’m just saying they are tougher then you think.
That is a nice fish BTW and yea I dig the beard too.
