Tim AngeliMemberI’m looking to purchase a new rod to be my main trout rod.

MemberIn reverse order, much good about both reels. Both are tough, lightweight and have great “innards.” I have both Litespeed and Evo for 5 wt’s. and slightly prefer my older model Litespeed, mostly because of the spaceship looks. 😮 I like the new model Litespeed style even better. Still some new “old model Litespeeds out there if you look hard – at blowout prices.
Given your budget comment, but still a desire for a top end rod, try a St. Croix Legend Ultra before you make a final decision. Excellent US built rod with great warranty. Priced below the others and plenty of guts to throw lead and light touch for dry fly presentation.
I’ve gotten into XP’s which fit my stroke, but I have a 3 wt. Ultra that I’ve really enjoyed for 3 years, and my wife has a newer model 3 wt. Ultra that she swears by. We spend 80% of our fishing time nymphing for what that’s worth.
My. $.02.

MemberI have the evolution and the lamson hard alox I would get the Lamson. I think the Lamson looks a lot better and is a little bit smoother. my .02 $

The Itinerant AnglerThe new model Lamsons have the toughest coating currently available as a consumer reel anodization.

MemberI’ll chime in, only on the off chance that, even though your profile shows Michigan, the fishing will all be done out west. If that’s the case, any one rod should probably be a 6 because of the wind. That said, my BIIx 8’6″ 5 wt. is such a joy for me that even out there, the 6 sometimes stays in the rod tube when conditions are such that I should break it out. Maybe I just need BIIx 6 wt.
If not exclusively west, go with the 5.
On budget, I’d second the “try a St. Croix” remark.
Good luck.

MemberTim,
I’d agree on 5-wt.

MemberTim,
One thing to consider is using the 6 weight for steelhead in Michigan.

MemberAnother Ross Evo/Lamson LS owner here. I hate to admit it but I like the Lamson better and I got both my LS2’s new from STP for $99 where my EVO’s were around 300.
IMO the Ross Evo looks awesome until you put line on it. I also used to think the Lamson looked fruity but once you handle one a bit it just kinda grows on you. Both are great reels.Mar 23, 2007 at 1:53 pm #16214Billy Belsom
MemberYeah, I am a big fan of the Lamson Litespeeds as fairly affordable saltwater reels. I fish a 3.0 with my 6/7wt., and a 3.5 with my 8wt. Without making the (huge) jump in $$ to the Tibor/Lamson ballpark, the Litespeeds are some of the best saltwater reels I’ve fished with. The sealed drag appeals to me. And they are light, so I find they balance well with the lightweight graphite salt rods.
Sexy? Well, I’m not sure I’d go there, not that there’s anything wrong with that Zach!
