I am researching brands of sunglasses to sell in my fly shop at the ranch and was wondering if you all could tell me what you use, why you chose them, and how satisfied you have been with them. I will start by telling you what I wear.

I wear the Native dash sunglasses, I chose them because they are super light and had changable lenses, and on a satisfaction scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best I would give them a 7. My biggest complaint being the lenses scratch to easy.

I have used Smith Action Optics, Fisherman Eyewear, Oakley, and Costa Del Mar.

I have become convinced that fishing sunglasses are extremely critical, and since I started paying for truly excellent ones, I’ve become more convinced of that.

I have Action Optics in glass and poly, Oakley and Maui Jim’s. Love them all but my Action Optics are my go to glasses. Optical quality is excellent and durability is excellent.

Costa gets my vote. Yea the good ones are heavy but hey, there GLASS and nearly indestructible. Paying over $150 for glasses with plastic lens.. I just can’t do it.

Zach, Glass Costa’s are pretty hard to scratch. What did you do to scratch them?

    Smith all the way.

Tim…you are forgetting that Moosedog is stocking a shop for the “privileged”!

I’ve got a pair of Smith Toosters that I’ve used for a seven years or so and then several pair of Native eyewear glasses since I like their warranty.  I’ve had issues with their (Native) nose pads more or less rotting or falling apart.  They’ve replaced glasses each time without paying the warranty fee.

Then fill it with the most expensive stuff you can find!

I will put in another vote for the Smith Action Optics – I have the “fishbone” model with amber-colored glass lenses.

    Joel,

I’ve got two pairs of Costas and favor them to most others. Unlike Zach, I’m not a big fan of the spring loaded temples because once the spring pops you are left with a

    Action Optics by Smith. Glass.

Have had two pair in 12 years of use. Polycarb still usable as backup. I still prefer the pilot frames. Glass with 2x diopters are my main glasses. Have sent back for repair of frames once (my fault, but no charge) and had to order replacement nose guards a couple of times (no charge). Service is great, easy to deal with via email. Quality of product superb.

Well, since your catering to a bunch of rich people who don’t mind paying a premium to fish, or shop I guess, (seeing how this is a “members only” fly shop), I would carry Action Optics. I wear the Guide’s Choice model, (got’em at an employee discount), great lense choices in glass and plastic. They aint cheap but…

I’ve got the Action Optics, glass, photochromic, amber and recommend them for a number of reasons.

First, the glass, while heavier, doesn’t scratch as easily. The first thing I notice when I put them on is how much cleaner they are than my everyday plastic glasses. I really think glass is the way to go. The additional weight is not so much that it’s an issue.

Photochromic is nice, too. The change is subtle, but it definitely helps. What I like most is that they lighten up when it gets darker – like late in the day or when I’m in the shade. They are not real dark – like some others – so I can wear them very late in the day. Sometimes I forget I’ve even got them on when it’s nearly dark out. I like to leave them on as much as possible for the polarization. Be carefull that you don’t get glasses that are too dark – and hinder your vision in the shade.

I don’t remember the frame style, but they are suited to my large head. They also have wide sides, which cuts down on the light entering form the side, and helps your vision. They’re well made, though I did smash a pair once. Customer service was excellent when I got the frame replaced.
