Joel ThompsonMemberMy wife and I were planning on going to St Croix this year during her spring break. Are plans fell through when our dog sitter/house sitter bailed on us this week. So now we are thinking about heading south to maybe New Mexico to fish the San Juan. Basically we need to get to some sunny weather and hit as many fun spots along the way. We will be driving from Montana and just heading south from there. Any of you have any suggestions on where to stop along the way that would be fun to fish and or just a fun place to visit?

Cameron MortensonMemberMy suggestion was going to be the Grey Reef section of the North Platte.

MemberI second Morty’s thoughts on the Reef…I would highly recommend fishing it, and it will be fishing well that time of year.

MemberMy wife and I stayed in Redstone, CO a few years ago. It is somewhat of an art community, but was once a mining town. It is south of Grand Junction, off of the 70. The inn we stayed at had been built to house the miners. The accomodations are nice (or charming, if it helps for the wife), but by no means are they luxurious. The little town of Redstone is small enough to walk through in an hour, even if you stop to look in most of the shops. It is a pretty little area. The residents seem to take a lot of pride in their community, lots of flower gardens and manicured lawns; we were there in July and the air literally buzzed with the beating of humming bird wings.
The area has access to good fishing. The Crystal River flows through the property and the inn can arrange for a guide; the Roaring Fork and Frying Pan are a scenic 30 minute drive.
If you are looking for night life and skiing, longitudinally, Aspen is only 15 miles away, but it takes better than an hour to navigate the distance.
From Redstone, it is about four hours to Denver and the 25, which will take you to NM.

Joel ThompsonMemberI am in Missoula and we would be leaving from there by Subaru. The Big Horn has crossed my mind, but I am trying to make this trip a little bit more about my wife than me since I am gone so much in the summers. She is a Spanish teacher so I think she my really enjoy the Spanish mission. I also think she would really enjoy Redstone as well so I will do some checking into that! She does love to fish as well so thanks Grey cliff suggestion. How technical is it to fish? Is access pretty good as well?
Thanks again for all of the suggestions so far! Please keep them coming!!! 🙂

MemberMD,
Access to the Reef is decent…although not as wide open as you would like.
