MemberI’m pondering the addition of a hip pack to my vest lineup.

MemberI recently bought one of the Simms Dry Creek roll top fanny packs. They were on sale for about half price. I bought it with the intention of using as a water-proof bag to carry the dslr. So far it has worked well for that purpose. Because of its design, it doesn’t have a great deal of features or offer much in the way of divided storage. If you don’t mind throwing everything in one compartment and your looking for a dry bag, it may be perfect.
I have used a Patagonia Hip/Chest pack for a while now. It can be worn around your waist, or on your chest. I’ve bonefished with it, fished in the surf for Albacore with it, and used it on mountain streams where I didn’t need much in the way of flies or gear. While it offers a fair amount of divided storage and organization, it really pales in comparison to some of the fanny packs that are on the market now. It all depends on how much stuff you want to carry and how organized you want to be.
Hope this helps.

Joel ThompsonMemberHey Poudre! How’s that snow treating you? Just remember the more snow the better the river flows in the summer.
Those Simms Dry Creek packs are pretty sweet. I have one for my camera that I love and just ordered the one your looking at on a pro-deal. If you are looking for a good deal check this out.

That should take you right to the pack you are looking for!

Cameron MortensonMemberfishmich…I have a Mountainsmith Tour lumbar pack (it is a generation or two back from the one they offer today).

MemberI also use the mountainsmith tour and am very pleased with it. Holds everything I need for fishing, and the straps are the perfect size to hold my rolled-up rainjacket under the pack.

The Itinerant AnglerMy solution to the waterproof issue was to buy C&F Designs boxes, which are themselves waterproof.

MemberThanks for the feedback…I was looking at some of the Fishpond packs in the shop and became impressed with the design…the shop is bringing one of the Simms packs in on order, when it comes in I’m going to compare it side by side with the Fishpond, and go with the one that seems best.

The small boxes from C&F aren’t waterproof are they?
I think the new mid size is water proof

The Itinerant AnglerThe new mid size is waterproof, the little ones definitely are not.

MemberI just decided to pick up the William Joseph Emerger Hip Pack.
Jan 30, 2007 at 6:32 pm #15252Ian Crabtree
MemberThe redesigned Sage hip pack looks pretty nice. I haven’t seen one in person though. Looks to be pretty similar to the Fishpond designs.

I’m still searching for the perfect hip pack, and I haven’t managed to find one yet.

MemberThat does look nice, Ian, for $80 is probably a pretty fair price too.

MemberThe William Joseph was like 55 bucks from Sierra Trading Post, usually about $100.

Memberunfortunately I’ve heard quite a few negative reports about how that stuff holds up and I’m pretty hard on my packs.
