MemberJust wanted to share in some excitement. I recently spent some Christmas money on a much needed 8wt setup. After much research and personal debate, I decided on the 4pc. TFO TiCr rod and new Hard Alox version of the Lamson Velocity 3.5. First, let me say that this rod and reel combination could not look any better together. The reel seat and reel are virtually the same color and the black rod with silver appointments just adds to the overall appearance. Second, while I am certainly not as technically savy and experienced as the majority of posters on this board when it comes to casting and rod analysis, this rod (even in my amateur hands) is a freakin rifle. I can not wait to try it out on my trip to the Georgia salt marshes this March. So far, I don’t think I could have done any better for the price range. For those that read my fly tyers post, I have also wet my feet in this new hobby with a HMH Spartan and some Dr. Slick tying tools. I have already started reading a few how-to books on the subject and am getting the hang of a few of the more simple methods (i.e. hook placement, starting thread, whip finishing). If anyone has any suggestions on future fly-tying instructional reads, I would love to hear them.

MemberFor written material, I would suggest Ted Leesons and Jim Schollmeyers Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying.

MemberGBurgFisher,
Coincidently, the Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying is one of the books I have started reading. I definately agree on the usefulness of the book’s unique layout. The “non-recipe” approach to fly tying is proving to be very beneficial in beginning this new challenge. I am trying to learn all of the basic methods before even attempting to tie my first “true” fly. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

MemberThanks for all of the information everyone. The video instructions have been extremely helpful. I still can not get over how easy some of these people make it look. Sorry for the tardy post, I have been slammed at work and have given the board hardly any attention.
Carter,
I will definitely keep in touch with you about a future fly tying session. So far, the only flies I have attempted have been Clouser’s. They are a little rough, but have surprisingly already caught a few fish (my biggest problems have been keeping the bucktail directly on top of the hook and achieving a clean cone-no hair sticking out over the hook eye). Just let me know when your available.
