I’ve been tasked with trying to find jackets for the guides at my lodge this summer. We’re switching from G3’s, and much to my dismay, it appears that Simms has discontinued the Classic Guide Jacket. Looking through the options of rugged hard shells, it looks like it’s a shootout between the Patagonia Stretch SST and the Cloudveil 8X Jacket. The Patagonia seems to be well-liked by everyone who uses them, but I haven’t heard a single report on the Cloudveil jackets. Has anyone worn an 8X jacket?

Also, am I missing any others? Orvis and regrettably Simms are not going to work.

#2 The 8X is a good jacket, but it isn’t going to keep your cuffs dry when you go swimming like I described to you the other day.

I have heard nothing but great things about this jacket.

    Thanks mendingmachine,

I’ll see if I can get my hands on one of those and take a look at it.

    Ian,

I don’t know what your budget is but you should check out Arc’teryx.  I have 2 of their jackets (a hard and soft shell) and wear them nonstop.  They aren’t made specificially for fishing (I think more for mountaineering and skiiing), but they really get the job done on the river.

My hard shell jacket is completely waterproof, water just falls off, and the soft shell is warm and windproof.

Give them a shot – it’s expensive stuff but my 5 year old hard shell that’s worn daily during the winter still looks brand new.  I don’t think I’ll ever buy another brand (or have to).

I like Patagonia’s Deep Wading jacket.

I prefer the Patagonia SST. Picked it up on sale 6 years ago and it’s still going strong

Thanks for all the comments everyone. Looks like we’re going to go with the Stretch SST. It’s gone through a slight redesign this year, so hopefully it will be as good as the previous version.

    Oh the confusion…

It looks like Simms has updated the classic guide jacket for this year.
