I have recently gotten a bonus at work and have been given the green light from the commander and chief ( my Wife ), to use part of it for another rod.

I cast a 8’6″ 6 weight Winston a long time ago and I still remember what a nice rod it was. I bet the Scott would be sweet too.

Are you really sure you want a six weight for the creeks?

For fishing trouts in creeks I’d say a 6 weightis way too much. I’d say go for a 3 or a 4 weight. And maybe a shorter rod length, say 7.6 or 8 ft.
But if it’s other spieces you’re heading for like smallmouth bass, maybe a 6 weight is indeed right. But I couldn’t figure that out form your posting.

    Good luck!

I think he laid it out pretty clearly

I am looking at getting a rod for fishing the smallmouth creeks in th ozarks.

Yea, I mainly fish the smallmouth creeks in my area, and we have a couple of medium to large size rivers close by that I canoe and fish.

Just my opinion but I wouldn’t spend a ton on a rod I was going to throw Clousers with. The high end blanks are usually very thin walled and won’t sustain a clouser impact well. With that said the Loomis GL3 6wt is a very sweet rod for the money. TFO, St Croix, and Cabelas FT, also comes to mind for a tuff but nice casting rod. Just something to think about.

Sorry if you are tired of hearing my opinions but…….

Just MHO’s but if you’re throwing clousers and such I would want a stiffer rod than the 2 you are thinking about. Here’s a pretty good article on 6 wt fly rods:

The verdict of this article was that the TFO TiCr rod was the best all around 6 wt.

    Hey Greg –

While I like the TFO TiCr very much myself and own two of them, I don’t think fly rods can be quantified in a test scenario in the way that article implies.

    I agree with you Zach.

I have a Scott S3 6 weight that I use with a SA Distance Taper and a Sink Tip line. You have to work out a little bit of line to to get into the sweet zone of this rod which starts at the back of the forward taper. I would think a rod like it would not be a good choice for what you describe as your conditions. The Winston or the G2 in a 8.5 or 8’8′ length seem like a good place to start. When my 6 gets back from being repaired, (nail not got stuck in the tip top and snapped the rod at the first ferule) I am going switch over to a Rio Grand line so it will load a little closer. The faster rods don’t seem to deliver heavier or more air resistant files as well as more moderate action rods it seems to me. Maybe Zach can comment on that since he has that new Heliply rod. If you need to deliver big or heavy flies a short distance I would think a medium action with a good weight forward line would be the thing.

Since you bring it up, with regards to your casting stroke and rod selection, I think its a falacy to lump large air resistant flies into the same category as ones that are simply heavy.

    Hey DMK –

Man, you know, two years ago I’d have agreed with you wholeheartedly, but the more experience I get, and the more rods I throw, and the more good casters I watch, the less I think the rod really matters in any way shape or form.

    Zach,

I think you are right on with alot of that, especially if we are assuming a common denominator of throwing WFF lines with average size flies.

Well, I’ll say for the record that Carter is a very good caster and he’s certainly got some meat behind his opinions; you are right that I’d choose the TCR over the SCPG if I were going to be throwing leadcore all day.

I agree fully with your comment on the line making the biggest difference when dealing with “average” fishing and I actually think that can translate back to some of what I said earlier.
