Just a word of praise here – I am about 100 pages from completing ‘Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell,’ a truly wonderful blend of William Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair” and, believe it or not, Harry Potter.
Premise: England is fighting the Napoleonic Wars when a dried up old stick of a man, Mr Norell, appears to declare he has rediscovered “practical” magic (“theoretical” or non-practicing historical magicians abound).
