Hey Zach,
The bayous are full of them. I never actually fished them on purpose, but I have caught them. They have bit Clousers, gold bendbacks and other shiny stuff. Slow and methodical is the key. They won’t chase much. I have heard of folks fishing them with just yarn on the tippet…gets tangled up in those minute teeth.
I did snag one on accident with a opper once. In the tail. He went about 10 lbs. It was quite an experience, but I got my popper back! 🙂
BD, bowfin are quite abundant down here (south Lousyana). We call them choupique as the Cajuns do. I’ve caught many accidentally as well. I don’t know how you’d target them, though. I caught most when I was drowning worms years ago, but they still hit the various fly when it’s deep and near the bottom.
Consequently I’ve caught more catfish on a Jitterbee than I ever did in my baitfishing days.
