MemberOne of the things that I enjoy while flyfishing is an occasional fine cigar, in the company of good friends.

MemberNo way, not me, not again.
I’m not a leisure angler. In other words, I cover a lot of ground while fishing. Also, I can’t chew gum and walk at the same time so concentrating on smoking a cigar and fishing/wading is a bad combination for me.
Case in point: I was fishing a small stream about 3 years ago when the mosquitos started driving me crazy. I remembered that I’d put a cigar in my vest a few days earlier that a friend gave me after the birth of his daughter. The only cigars I usually smoke are in the company of a campfire and several longnecks so I’m not a seasoned cigar afficionado. I hooked a nice 14″ brown and it did what most browns do…head for cover. I was wrestling with the fish and forgot about the burning dog rocket in between my lips. In my excitement I clinched my teeth, tightened my lips, acclerated my breathing and…well…you can imagine what happened next.
With a 14″ fish on the end of my line, my eyes rolled back into my head, I fell over, gagged and came an ace from blowing chunks all over the creek. I did land the fish and I did keep the skeeters off of me for a short time, but I vowed to never again smoke a cigar while fishing. I do sometimes carry a pipe with me, but I suck so bad at smoking a pipe that I can’t keep the damned thing lit most of the time so it’s a moot point. More for something to play with than to actually enjoy smoking.

MemberI’ve never been into cigar smoking, though once or twice I’ve smelled cigar smoke on the breeze, so someone else on the river was enjoying one.
Of course, the breeze has also occasionally brought me the fragrance of a lit-up doobie, so apparently the folks around here like to smoke all kinds of stuff while they fish.

MemberI don’t smoke, but if I did I would definitely smoke a cigar while I fished.

MemberOOOOohhhh I do love a good cigar on the stream, but you can tell by my choice I may not know what a good cigar is.

MemberI have to say I like a good cigar. Also, a good cigar is good way to fight off bugs.
If you want to see something harsh, take the deet spray you are putting on our skin on some plastic, you have laying around, and don’t care to damage.
As far a favorite cigar, it is usually the one I bum off of my friends.Mar 17, 2006 at 2:48 pm #12247mike b.
MemberA cigar is a fine way to keep the bugs away.

Cameron MortensonMemberWell…I had to go back nine pages to bring this thread back…

Without access to the premium smokes I enjoyed seveal “throw down” cigars on the river last week to keep the biters away.

MemberA cigar was definitely a savior on an early morning trip to the Everglades. There were so many bugs out before sunrise that I thought I was going to go mad. They were getting in every orifice on my face, and at one point I could hardly enhale without taking in a few dozen.
