The Itinerant AnglerIf I were you I’d go to Yellowstone, Grand Teton, or Glacier and camp and fish.

MemberThere is only one choice on your list that includes fishing AND a girl. You have to go to Maui.

MemberYellowstone is always my first choice with Captiva/Sanibel a close second. Take the yak, fish Ding Darling, Blind Pass, the light house on Sanibel at night, and the beaches. Rent a motor boat from Jensen’s for less than $200 to have a better shot at the tarpon.

The Itinerant AnglerHey C –
What about northern Baja?

Steve K.MemberCarter,
In my opinion, Glacier can’t be beat for scenery, but the fishing is much better in Yellerstone.

MemberSounds like you can not go wrong with Maui & have the 411 on Sanibel/Cap.

MemberI actually would be very interested in anything you’ve got about Baja, even southern Baja as well.

The Itinerant AnglerBaja’s huge, of course, but apparently the entire northern interior waters are very open and empty and you can camp alone on the sand.

MemberI have fished the Ft. Myers/Sanibel area a few times and would gladly do so again.

MemberYeah, if tarpon was the main deal I would definitly be headed back down to Texas since I know a great, fairly isolated spot down there.

MemberIn my time down there, I learned that if you home in on the passes while the tide is changing, it’s hard to go wrong this time of year.

MemberDing Darling is a bird sanctuary on Sanibel and is situated in a mangrove swamp of sorts. A one way road winds–I think–about seven miles through the preserve and fishing the culverts on the tides is pretty popular. Snook, drum, sheepshead, pompano, all those predatory fish will hold off the sides of the current and ambush bait being flushed through.
I was fishing there one afternoon and making a fly change when the tide switched. In the time it took me to pick a pattern and tie it on the water made an abrupt turn around and began rushing the other way. It was pretty neat to see just how powerful the tide actually is. The gulf tides had always seemed pretty benign– without a lot of drop or rise in their comings and goings. But, seeing it channeled through a small opening like that instilled a little more respect in me.
Another time I was fishing there I turned in time to see a leopard spotted ray with a six or seven foot wing span appear from nowhere, lanquidly roll on the surface and disappear. The water isn’t any more than three or four feet deep, but richly stained; it amazed me how easy it was for something so large to have gone undetected until the moment it porpoised, then vanish again so quickly.
Jose Wajabe did a show from there a few years ago. He waded a couple of the bays, but to his guides protest. There is a healthy aligator population on the island and they aren’t all that hard to spot when they are sunning on the surface or lumped on a beach. You would never see one laying on the bottom, though (see prior paragraph), and could easily walk into one’s maw.
I’d agree with bd, the snook should be on fire now. June is the best month for the tarpon. The reds have probably slowed some. The trout and jacks should be great.
