If you fish a dropper is it on the slim chance you might hook two fish? Is one a strike indicator? Is it to expedite figuring out what the fish are feeding on and where in the water column? If the later is the case do you clip off the less productive fly and fish with just one?

i mainly use the dropper system with the top fly as more of a strike indicator.

I like to see what they are eating by using two or more flies. Scuds for example, I tie a couple of different colors to see which they prefer.

Never caught a double but I’ve heard of it happening before.

I’ve only had a second fish grab the dropper once. I was fishing a two nymph rig below an indicator, one fish took the lead nymph and gave the other nymph a nice “leisenring lift” that that must have proved irresistible. Luckily the second fish didn’t stick, because all hell broke loose when it happened.

I like using droppers for double nymph rigs, mainly because I hate (and don’t trust) split shot. The lead fly is normally used to take down the smaller nymph – kind of like the epoxy bombs they use in NZ.

Several of the guides I fished with out west used two and even three fly streamer rigs to cover different parts of the column.

I use both set-ups… indicator, nymph and double nymph.

In Ireland fishing on the lakes i have had two trout on at the same time when i use a big bushy fly like a #12 bibio(irish terrestrial fly) and a #14 nymph like a hares ear or a buzzer on the dropper. It does happen and can be quite fun as the fish often swim in different directions.

    Hey Jack –

I’ve read that you Irish can handle up to 8 flies at once in a ‘cast’ (American translation: a group of droppers, I think).

    Hey

Personally I have only ever used three at the same time and if its to windy these can be a hassle as well. I havent heard of eight flies at once sounds like a bit of a handful. If i was to do that i would have them dangle of the leader on a short trace. To fish them I dont know normally i would fish them at the speed of the drift in a boat stripping the flies kind of slowly. My casting isnt great at times and i havent a cluce how to stop them from tangeling the leader would be ridiculously long. There you go.

    Jack
