MemberI just sold my Sage sp and am looking to get a new five weight. I have been to a couple of shops casting different rods and have narrowed it down to a few I like.
Scott E2
Winston bllx
Sage slt (which I have in the 489-5)I have yet to cast a Scott S3 OR G2 but when I get the chance would like to include them in the search. Any opinions on an all around five weight that I will use for the majority of my fishing.
Thanks

The Itinerant AnglerHey DBunch-
If you are looking for a rod similar to the SP, the G2 or the SLT would be my recommendations.

MemberHey Zach:
I sold the sp because it was a three piece and became cumbersome during travel and I also have recently developed an itch for a new rod.
I have to say the Hands on approach Scott uses in making their rods is very appealing to me. I really like the E2 series they have came out with but am not real happy with the components used on the rods. I have not had a chance to cast the G2 yet, but thought the original G was a bit slow for my taste.
I will be using it as my go to rod. I spend alot of time in a drift boat , but also will use it for wade fishing everything from small nymphs to dries to occasionally
throwing big streamers. I am not someone who has alot of rods. I usually have a couple in different weights that I use for most applications. I really am looking for my meat and potatoes rod if you know what I mean.DBunch

The Itinerant AnglerHey DBunch –
If you liked the overall action of the SP I think the G2 would fit you well.

MemberIf you intened on spending that kind of money I recomend you contact my freind John Launstein. He builds rod’s that make Sage look like 2nd’s. I kid you not, but don’t take my word for it check it out for your self at http://www.gandlflycraft.com

MemberJohn/Rocky Mt. has quite the reputation in the rod building world and not really a good of one…. Seems he sold alot of people blanks/components and for whatever reason they never got them. I dealt with John a couple of times and both times had to press the issue of getting my stuff after I paid. Tom Kirkman removed his link from Rod Building.org because of mutable complaints of merchandise not received or received very, very, very, late. I would hate to see someone on this site go through that.
He is no doubt a very nice guy and was always very helpful when he used Tom’s board. I don’t like bad mouthing anybody but he did make his own bed. Maybe, hopefully, he’s got his stuff together now.
As a side note some of the blanks John used to build those fine rods were Dan Craft Signature V series. The patent for that series was sold out from under Dan Craft and they are no longer available. I think Dan plans to introduce a new series very close to the original soon but I’m not sure when they will be available again.

MemberI’ll stick out like a sore thumb here but… You owe it to yourself to cast all the contenders. I have and ended up with not one but three BIIx’s. After I sell my 7 weight Scott S3, number four is on order!
I like that series because of the broad usable range they comfortably handle, the fact they weight less than the others (and feel FAR lighter in the hand) and they are simply a joy to catch fish on.
I have an old Scott G that’ll go to the grave with me! It is one sweet, sweet rod! Limited in range to close work, but a pure joy to use! I tried the G2 hoping to love it but left thinking, ‘what was the point in making it?’ The SLT’s I’ve cast felt as numb through the middle section of the blank.
I admit it… the BIIx series spoiled me rotten! Enough, in fact, to sell of a few classic GLX’s to get them!
To each his/her own but I can list 10 people off of the top of my head who swore they would never spend X amount on a rod… until they cast the BIIx!
The very few you see for sale are usually from people who expected a ‘fast’ rod (even though Winston calls it that) and wanted to throw sinking lines with it. Though they will do that, there are far better rods out their for that limited job!my 2 centavo’s! 😉

MemberThe BIIX is a nice rod in a 4, 5, or 6wt. the 6 feels like 5 weight. With all the upheavals at Winston in the last year or so they have had some quality issues. I saw some pictures of guides out of alignment and some of the grips have been squeaking etc. They may have fixed all that. Check the Winston forum for more info. I wish they would get back to their roots as a company there was a time when they held the high ground. The Thomas and Thomas 5 weight Helix is a really nice rod that I have cast as well as the Winstons. There is a lot of good buzz about the G2s and the S3 is a horse of a rod. Try as many as you can you’ll find 1 you can’t live without.
