chris zandoMemberWhat is everyone’s favorite rod? I am now a Winston convert and my Sage XP feels like it is made out of brick. My true love is a 9′ 4 weight BIIX……….smoooth. It even held up well on the mighty South Fork of the Snake!

MemberRight now it would have to be the Sage VT2 9′ 4 wt that I just bought.

MemberRight now my favourite single hand rod for salmon is the Sage TCR 9′ #8, its the only eight weight I’ve used that I didn’t have a complaint with.

Memberi would have to go with the winston bIIx. it just makes casting so effortless. i was a sage slt fan but the bIIx got me hooked. the best rod under 300$ has to be a sage fli.

MemberI would have to agree that the Sage FLi is the best rod under $300.

MemberI have one of the Sage FLi rods in an 8wt and I like it quite a bit. It serves as a combination carp/striper/streamer rod. I cast it side by side with some more expensive Sage models and I just liked the feel of the FLi better. The component parts aren’t as nice as the more expensive rods, but it’s reasonably light for the money and I like the way it casts. As my casting gradually gets better, I like it even more.
But in the grand scheme of things, I like my G.Loomis Streamdance rods better (5wt GLX and 3wt Metolius).

The Itinerant AnglerHey Poudre –
Nice to have you and glad we made a good impression on somebody.
Would your moniker be for the Cache La Poudre out in Ft. Collins?

MemberCurrently, it’s an 8′ 7-wt 2/2 bamboo I just took delivery of from Harry Boyd, rodmaker. However, since the fishing here is still out on winter vacation, the wet grass is all it’s seeing!

MemberHey Kid,
Yeah the TXL is a great rod. I tried out a lot of different rods before I settled on buying it. In my opinion it is worth saving your pennies for if you’re in the market for a light rod. I’m really glad I bought mine. Last year I used the sage quiet double taper on it and it worked good, but I think that I’ll try an airflo river and stream line on it this year. I really like those lines.
It’s definately not a dry fly only rod. I do throw nymphs and streams with mine. I actually fish more nymphs overall than dries and streamers. Usually in the size 10 to 20 range in various weight configurations. The thing to keep in mind is that the heavier the fly gets the harder it is to cast gracefully. You just up the tippet size to facilitate good turn over and then adjust your cast to compensate for the weight of the fly. I usually pick up my cast side arm and bring the forward stroke over top, which is what a lot of caster do to avoid getting tangled or hit in the head. You won’t however be throwing many heavy weight #2,4, or 6 stonefly nymphs. 😮
I also throw some streamers with it when needed (mostly unweighted sizes 6 – 10). Having said that however this is not the main purpose of this rod. But it’s good to know that you can if you need to. I bought mine for mainly really small streams. I wound recommend the 7’10” if you’re fishing bigger streams more regularily or casting heavier flies more frequently.
At any rate it is a great little rod, and it is getting more attention all the time. Guys (and girls) are really showing lots of interest in the 00 weights in the shop, as well as the other light weights.
Later Kid, tightlines!!

MemberSince I only have two rods, both St Croix, I’d have to chip in with the 9′ 5 wt legend. You’ve got me interested in checking out a few others, though.
