Hey all… I was at the Charlotte Rod Show this past weekend and had a lesson with Steve Rajeff. I could have sold my spot at the class for 4X what I paid for it!
He tweaked a few bothersome issue’s I had with my cast. That alone was worth the price of admission!
One thing that fired me up big-time was when Steve got into casting shooting heads. Zach has discussed this numerous times around the web but it never really caught my attention. Let me tell you, if you haven’t tried it it makes for some serious chest thumping ammo!
Steve had a rod rigged for use for anyone who wanted to try it. Whoa! It’s a whole new ball game!
After the lesson I went and talked to Simon Gawesworth from Rio about shooting heads. He set me up witha Rio Outbound line on a Sage Xi2 rod. I saw the backing! When I took the rig back to the booth and asked the length of the line he said it was 130′! I never came close to casting that far before this weekend!
This kid is geaked about this shooting head stuff now!

I have a video somewhere of me bouncing a cast back at 125′ – that is a 10 weight with 30′ of LC-13.
This biggest problem I’ve had is finding a head that doesn’t dump.
Zach, Simon say’s (I love being able to say that! ;D) that if you are dumping the cast you probably don’t have a big enough fly on it. I have the same problem when casting a sink tip for distance. Mr. Rajeff said it’s probably not enough overhang.
I haven’t tried either remedy yet but you can bet I will now!I have cast the ZG. My first impression was, zero gravity it ain’t. If it was any lighter than the rods I prefer I could buy the name.
The only time I cast it I was really impressed with it’s feel up close. At distance it seemed to punk out though. When I noticed that I asked the dealer if he up-lined it. He did! :-/ Sadly, as of yet I haven’t been able to give it a fair evaluation.Bigger flies will keel the head and delay turnover but if you’ve ever thrown 390 grains of level head you’ll know there’s a point of diminishing returns.
Zach, NGTO has a competition coming up mid-March. I plan on going. How about it?

Well it is fast approaching. NGTO will once again be holding its Annual Spring Fling.
When: Saturday, March 18th
Where: Buford Hatchery
Time: 8:00 am til it is over. Usually around 3:00 pmThis year, Kent Edmonds wiil be holding a program on Fishing for Shoal and Striped Bass. Kent has also been kind enough to donate a 1/2 guided trip for 2 that can be used to go for the Shoal Bass, Stripers or can be used at Calloway Gardens.
As always, there will be great BBQ cooked by our own Gold Star BBQ (B983), door prizes and auction items, and RocketRoy’s now famous Casting Competition. We are also going to hold some tying classes for both beginners and kids as we did at the Fall Fling. More information will be coming forward on these events by the folks that will be holding them.So set aside the date on your calander and come have a great time.
