I am not sure what these flowers are, but I caught them late in bloom and they were a nice relief from the unending greens of the Smokies. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most polluted national park in the country, despite being an International Biosphere reserve. Smog from the coal industry in East Tennessee wafts over the Park, which, it being a rainforest, tends to trap the pollution. However, rumour has it the trees like the carbon dioxide, and the smog may partly account for the Park’s lushness.
