iPhone 4 Fly Art
07/09/10 at 11:43pm

The new iPhone 4 arrived today and I had a chance to play around with the camera and video functions.  It is a very respectable upgrade and the white balance, at least on my model, is excellent.  Furthermore, the up-close images (nearly macro) are incredible.  In summary, a fly tier could photograph and videotape a fly tying sequence with this camera phone.

Here are some images of my Tarpon flies honestly taken "straight out of camera".  It's always fun to see the fruits of labor neatly lined up and color coordinated before the battle. Let's hope they look this good to the Tarpon next week.Grin

Jeez... those macro shots are amazing!
All taken with a smartphone!  Shocked

I'm waiting for the upgrade early september when my 2 year contract with my iPhone 3G is done.
Can't wait...

Have you tried shooting some video's with your iPhone?

Great photos Neal, especially considering that they're off the iPhone 4.  Very impressive.  Great looking tarpon flies too...looking forward to the report after that trip...

Here is a one minute HD Video of the fly box with the phone.  The HD video is very impressive.

Equally amazing too!
Have you tried the 'tap to focus' on the video too? This way you can blur the background. All this on a smart phone!
I usually bring along a separate camera when fishing but I think I can take my iPhone instead in the future.

I'll give you a choice:
You can send me the iPhone or the nice tarpon flies!  Grin

I just took a new business subscription for my business and I got the new iPhone 4.

Here's a short video I took just out of camera and I was curious how good the video capabilities are of the iPhone 4 on focus-depth part  (foreground focused, back ground blurred and the other way around).

I'm blown away... This is amazing! On a smart phone for $@*& sake!

Here's the link to my video: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Watch it in 720p mode for best result. During converting on YouTube the quality gets a tiny beat. The original quality is slightly better(!).

Do not upgrade to the new OS with your 3G it ruins the phone

Jay,

That is a good example of selective focus with the iPhone 4 video.  I have been working on ways to stabilize the images when shooting handheld.  That little HD recorder magnifies shake a great deal and it's really noticeable when editing.  The selective focus works, that's for sure.

iOS 4.1 (out sept 8th) will take care of the lagging on 3G models.

The video was shot on the iPhone.

Neal,

The shaking is indeed something that ruins the video.
It's almost impossible to hold the iPhone still when shooting without some form of a steady underground or a tripod. The iPhone has no way to attach to a tripod.

The image stabilization option in iMovie isn't getting the job done 100%.

Image stabilization in Final Cut works well but as you know it takes forever and it crops the composition. Oh well, still pretty amazing HD video for a phone.
