Fun with Bugs
07/06/10 at 1:29pm

I've been tying some realistic bugs to bring along on my upcoming Adirondack trip, not to lure fish with, instead to lure insects, for photographing.  Last year it was unusually cold and wind in New York, and the Hex mayflies hatched a week after I left, and the dragonflies were amazingly absent and inactive.  I’m hoping this week’s heat wave stirs up some insect activity before I arrive.

I plan to bring a couple of dragonflies, hex mayflies, and a dozen houseflies.  Last night I finished tying 30 houseflies, 20 to fill an order, and ten for me, and I will likely photograph those later this afternoon.

Here’s a few of the bugs I’m bringing…

Thanks Corey and Neal.  I like backgrounds out of focus, especially with birds and bugs, and try to position my camera to have as much distance between the subject and background as possible.  All of the photos above were shot outdoors, in natural surroundings, except for the first one, the hex's, which I shot at my tying desk.

Another shot from my desk...

Your realistic stuff is so top shelf Graham.

Any chance I could get you to work on a Kate Beckinsale for me?

Graham, your work is nothing short of inspiring.  Both the tying and the photography.

I love this picture from your homepage.  It just sums up your work in one shot. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Hey Colin, thanks, I'm really glad you like my stuff, and I sure hope the mayflies will cooperate.

Brett,  thank you, I'll work on Kate for you.  LOL...

Thanks Neal, that means a lot to me.  Those are some of 212 moths I created for Adam Sander's flick Grown Ups.  I haven't seen the movie yet, but there is a trailer online that shows Adam messin around with a moth on his electric moth zapper.  I've read a few movie reviews that mention that the funniest scene is when the guys cook bacon on a moth zapper.  I'm guessing that is the scene with quite of few of my white moths.  I have a long list of things to keep an eye out for, including next moth when Angelina's movie Salt is on screen, with my spiders.
