Rode gets a particularly good rap. I have a Rode podcast mike for recording narrations for the DVD's but its just a tad big to go putting on top of a 7D. I'll let you know how it goes. Morsie

Hey Morsie,

I use the Rode VideoMic on my 5D M11. It works really well, cuts out a lot of wind noise and is very lightweight. They're fairly cheap to buy too. I used mine to interview someone on a boat last week in strong wind. The sound turned out surprisingly well for such a simple, easy to use device.

On another note, this is my first post here. Zach does a great job with website and forum!

I'm pretty sure there's an optional "dead cat" which further eliminates wind noise, but even without it, the sound is surprisingly good. Cheers Scott

Hi Morsie,

Not to get off topic, but after going though this process of mics over the last year I realized that the best option for me (and many many others) was to forget about the hotshoe/camera mics and go with the H4N hand Recorder. This is hands down one of the top 5 purchases I've made in the past 3 years (and that includes all audio/visual/photo purchases). You can review the product yourself online or PM if you have specific questions.

Basically, this is the highest quality hand recorder available currently and it would actually record a symphony with high fidelity. What you do for camera/video is to sync it with your footage by using a clap board (I use a dog training clicker) and then just splice it to your video sequence in your editing software. It comes with a handle and also a solid wind sock. It works great on the boat and even on the flats with 20-30k winds.

It also works great for doing voice-overs for tutorials and is very small and lightweight.

It does have an xlr jack, so it might be possible to connect to the 7D. Might have to call the company and ask them.

Darryl Lampert Small Fry Offline Posts: 30 Cape Town, South Africa	Re: Mike for 7D Reply #8 - 07/27/10 at 3:51pm Hi Morsie, I use a Sennheiser MKE-400 Mini Shotgun Mic which is very small, plugs into the hot shoe, reduces wind noise dramatically and takes away the horrible camera noise that you get if you use the onboard mic. You also get a windjammer for it although standard is pretty good.
