50D or 7D
05/14/10 at 8:15pm

I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a body this week and trying to decide between these two bodies.
I woud like some input from people familiar with either of these bodies.

                                  Thanks

If money isn't an issue between them, and you want to stay with the 1.6 format body, 7d all the way - huge improvements in the AF system, camera controls, not to mention HD video.

If money isn't the issue go with the 5D II. I struggled with the same decision Jarrod but ultimately money is a deciding factor for me and at the time the 7d was almost twice the price. I wanted to spend the bulk of my money on glass.

I would love to have the 7D but IMO it's a little overpriced for the improvements I'm interested in. I'm not saying it's overpriced. If I needed a camera that was also a video camera I'd be all over it.  If I had to do it again I'd most likely buy another 50D or save up a little for a  5D II.

Money is not the deciding factor in this choice, but I have an incredible video camera that I doubt the 7d can compare to. I just dont see myself using that feature and I don't think I want to go full frame either, so that only leaves 1 option and I guess it will be the 50 d.

Jarrod -

Don't know if this will help, but I shoot stills alongside a guy who shoots video for the show "The Kayak Fishing Show - with Jim Sammons" - it airs on WFN (and in fact their first dvd is about to air there too...but I digress).

Anyway, he had recently picked up a Canon body that shoots video - I think an Ti1 ... and when paired with good glass, he was tremendously impressed with it. He attributes how impressed he was to the great glass that the body gets paired with, and while his Sony shoots good HD, if things worked out, he'd consider switching to shooting with still cams paired with Canon glass.

Just my dos pesos.

I'm off to shoot with him again on Monday in fact - Mazatlan this time. A few days of chasing bass in Lake Mateos, and then back to Mazatlan for big fish outta kayaks. Should be a hoot.   Smiley

The 7D still does a lot of things that the 50D doesn't not even considering the video... the ergo's are way better on it, and the AF system is a whole new design when compared to the 50.

I have both .. I'd go for the 7D. Personally, I dont like the iso noise the 50D. Not to mention all the "other stuff".

I really enjoy my 7D. I upgraded from a XTi. I have never owned a 50D so I can't offer up any advice on that body. I just picked up a used 5D classic and so far I am more impressed with the 7D, both are nice cameras though.

I am going to buy the 70 200 2.8 L II and the 100mm L macro and the 17-40L f4. for starters I'm sure. i would love suggestions on other good glass to hink about also.

Congrats Jarrod, I'm sure you'll love the new toy, oops I mean tool Wink

BTW, I've got a 17-40L f4 I'm selling if you're interested.  It's in mint condition, glass is perfect, original box, etc.  Only reason I'm sell it is that I've upgraded to the 16-35 f2.8, primarily for that extra stop when shooting low light as part of my wedding business.  Feel free to PM me if you'd like more info.

The 10-22mm is killer on the 1.6 crop formats. I use mine a good bit on my 30d.

I would love to have the 17-55mm 2.8 IS as well. While not L glass (i suspect due to being a crop frame only lens), it is arguably better in IQ than the 24-70 and gives you image stabilization.

Both of them seem to hold their value well also so you could get out with minimal loss if you went to FF.

I just picked up the 70-200 F4 IS. I've only shot with it a few days now and my initial impression is that it is an extremely accurate and easy to use lens. The images just look perfect right out of the camera. It's the best Canon, or any other brand lens I've shot so far. Best bang for the buck too.

Adam I'd love to have that 10-22 but I keep telling myself I should just save up and buy a FF body then I'd have a whole new set of lenses. It's a tough call.

Mike, I have the 70-200 2.8 non IS and it is the same way. Super fast and straight forward. Your f/4 is supposed to be much sharper from what I have seen and read. I want to pick up a decent walk around lens and have been bouncing back and forth between the 17-55 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8

Another vote for the 7D!  I have also recently purchased the 70-200 F4 L IS and am blown away with this lens - super sharp. Next purchase is either the 17-55 F2.8 or the MPE 65 or the new rod and reel?  Smiley

The 7D would be my choice too. I recently purchased a Tokina 11-16 lens for this camera. Only had it a few days, big issues f2.8 and 11mm but very very good at f8 at most other settings. I bought it for use in a boat where the 17-40 on the 7D struggles a little.

Anyone else using this Tokina?

The 70-200/2.8 is a GREAT lens.  I borrowed my brothers about 6 months ago, and he is going to have to steal it to get it back.

If you're interested, i have EF-S 10-22 i am looking to part with.  Its definitely the best option out there for wide angle on the 1/6x bodies.  Let me know.

Well I guess I had trouble making the original choice and I went with the 50d (which is an amazing camera) and today I picked up the 7d so now I guess I can shoot both and decide which is the best. I promise it would be tough to choose either as they are both great.
Now which lens to get next Tongue
