The Itinerant Angler
This summer we’re going to run a biggest fish photo contest. I’ll be the judge of the eventual winner, and there will be prizes, which I am assembling now. To start with, we already have a pair of Costa Hamlin sunglasses in 580G Silver Mirror with the Black frames (retail $249).
These are Costa’s very best lenses in a very nice frame design, appropriate for men with medium to large faces.

From Scott Fly Rods, one lucky winner will get a hat and t-shirt in your size (styles still to be determined).
Here are THE RULES:
(1) You must be a board member with at least 3 posts outside this topic to be eligible to win, but you can join and post at any time.
(2) The fish in question must be photographed, ideally with a tape measure or object of known size in frame for reference.
(3) All fish species are eligible and I will use my discretion and knowledge to determine the relative size of the fish for its species. This means a 12-inch Georgia mountain brook trout would be competitive with a 25 lb. Tennessee striped bass or a 5 lb. Montana brown trout. If I don’t know enough about the fish to make a judgment call, I have plenty of experts I can call upon to help me.
(4) All fish must be fly-caught. I will use my discretion to enforce this rule.
(5) The contest started on April 1 and will end on August 15. Fish must be caught in that timeframe. I will declare the winner(s) and ship the prize(s) at that time.
Good luck! There will probably be runner up prizes as well, so if someone blows us away in the first week, keep posting!
PS This is largely Jay Malyon’s idea and I want him to get credit even though I think he was hoping we’d be giving away a truck or something. 🙂

Mike TolbertMemberAwesome… Great idea Jay/Zach!
Let me set the fish to beat…

Keep in mind, I have an extremely LARGE thumb.

The Itinerant AnglerHahaha, great entry Mike! I should probably clarify that there will be NO LIMIT ON ENTRIES, so if you break the 14″ mark next time…
😉

Hahaha. I was also hoping there would be some kind of keg party / cookout involved. Yall just come over tomorrow evening and we will call that the kick off.

Clay SmithMemberZach,
I’m just curious if fly caught would include a san juan worm or a nymph under an indicator that I’m throwing with a spinning reel?
I don’t want to post a photo and get accused of trying to be sneaky.
Thanks,

The Itinerant AnglerNice first entry, Chris! Give us some stats on how big that one was, and while you’re at it can you tell us a little about what GT fishing is like?

MemberYou mean Golden Trevally as opposed to Giant Trevally (what we call GT’s)?
It’s awesome! That fish was about 70cm long and I guess around 4kG? It took a “Julia” fly on 16lb tippet, tailing in some coral flats maybe 2-3′ deep. I used my Scott S4s #9 and that’s a Harfin reel 9/10 prototype reel hanging off it running a Wulff Bermuda Lost Tip I think.
Goldies are a fantastic target on the flats and in the area I fished often hang around permit. They will take a variety of flies but crabs and shrimp flies are the most popular as well as baitfish flies like Clouser Deep Minnows. At Hinchinbrook we must have had 40 or more shots at permit and could clearly see some goldies mixed in. They take a fly a little easier than permit 🙂 We get them here over a metre in length on the flats and they are just THE BEST fly rod target… If you do everything right they will take a fly well, fight hard and handle well. And they look awesome – here’s a smaller one I got, my first ever, you can see the different colouration.

The Itinerant AnglerHa! Sorry, I thought the ‘Summer 2014’ title was taking care of that. I’ve put the start date of April 1 in the rules. Contest ends August 15.

The Itinerant AnglerPretty nice for the species, Jay. Did you see the McFlyshop’s video? They had some awesome shots with some bigger hybrids caught on Spey tackle. Y’all are super lucky to have that resource.

Marty HornMemberWell here you go,
While the wife and I were stripping small streamers for crappie on one of our local rivers this beast took my fly and us for a ride. No time for a measurement as you can see. Before I could do it out of my hands and back in the river.
